More misery for Mowbray and 'Boro

|

Tony Mowbray Celtic newsMiddlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray was sent reeling by a late 1-2 as league newcomers Burton Albion dumped Middlesbrough out of the FA Cup.

A double from Shaun Harrad in the last ten minutes put Burton into the fourth round draw leaving Mowbray to pick up the pieces and concentrate on his side’s relegation battle.

Kris Boyd replaced Scott McDonald in the ‘Boro side and all seemed to be going to plan when Gary O’Neill gave the visitors the lead.

Mowbray decided to substitute Boyd as soon as Burton equalised with Harrod sealing a famous win in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

“Last minute goals are killing us,” the former Celtic boss admitted. “It happened at Elland Road last weekend and it’s happened again today.

“If we could have taken a better share of our chances it wouldn’t really have mattered. They wouldn’t have gambled like they did because they would have been two or three goals down and out of it.

“But when a team is only one goal down, they’ll always put you under pressure in the last few minutes. It’s another example of one goal never being enough.

“I don’t even think it was a case of them putting us under any sort of pressure. It was just two isolated incidents.

“Even for the seven or eight minutes between their two goals there was only one team trying to score a winner – and that was us.

“Then they get a free kick in the 93rd minute and they scored from it. It was a case of two shots and two goals for Burton.”

Mowbray’s comments are strikingly similar to those offered up after various Celtic set-backs last season.

Boro’s top player, defender David Wheater, is in talks with Bolton over a transfer with Mowbray likely to reinvest the transfer fee to add some width to his squad.

Paul Lambert’s Norwich were on the receiving end of one of the biggest shocks of the day when they lost 1-0 at home to Leyton Orient with a first half header from Jimmy Smith taking the Londoners through.

Watford came from a goal down to beat Hartlepool 4-1 to extend Malky Mackay’s side’s winning run to six matches.

Stevie Kean steered Blackburn to a 1-0 win over Championship leaders QPR, Davie Moyes’ Everton won 5-1 away to Scunthorpe while Wolves boss Mick McCarthy saw his side fight back to earn a 2-2 draw and replay away to Doncaster Rovers.

This was always Tony Mowbray’s problem. He can’t see or admit when he is wrong. It is always everyone else to blame.
