John Herron goal not enough for Scotland

|

Marcus Fraser Celtic newsA first half goal from John Herron wasn’t enough to take Scotland through to the finals of the European Championships as the Czech Republic fought back to earn a draw and place in the finals.

Herron was one of five Celts in Ross Mathie’s starting XI and gave Scotland the perfect start with a 13th minute goal.

The Czech’s only required a draw to go through having beaten Italy and Slovakia last week and equalised through Lukas Stratil in the 62nd minute.

Scotland threw on Lee Erwin and Cameron Smith in a bid to snatch a winner but had to settle for a draw and second place behind the Czechs.

In their earlier group matches Scotland had drawn 0-0 with Italy and beaten the Slovakia thanks to a double from Kilmarnock’s Matthew Kennedy.

I’m no lover of anything to do with the sfa but it would have been nice to see a few Celts grace a finals tourny .

I remember taking great pride in the involvement of a few of our young hoops when Scotlands under 16,s reached the World Cup Final against Saundi Arabia’s under 40s !

Big Jim Beattie s left foot thunderbold at tynecastle in the semi and Brian O’Neills penalty or two in the final . They were great days to watch football, pity their big team and their supporters don’t get it .
