Craig Brown faces Hampden ban

|

Craig Brown Aberdeen newsCraig Brown is certain to be banned from the touchline for Aberdeen’s Scottish Cup semi-Final with Celtic on April 17.

The Aberdeen boss was involved in an amazing after match bust-up with Motherwell owner John Boyle after watching his side lose 2-1 at Fir Park.

Boyle is clearly seen whispering something to his former manager with the former Scotland boss raising his arms as he sets off after Boyle in full view of the television cameras.

Neil Lennon and Ally McCoist were both banned for a similar incident following Celtic’s Scottish Cup defeat of Rangers on March 2.

Following that incident the SFA applied a four match ban on the Celtic manager which started two weeks after the incident. As a first offender McCoist was given a two match ban with Brown certain to get the same punishment.

Brown should be free to use the dug out for Aberdeen’s matches against St Mirren, Hibs and Rangers with a two match ban due to start on April 16- the day before the Hampden clash with Celtic.

“I’ve just been interviewed by the police and they’ve asked me not to say anything,” Brown said yesterday.

“This will have to come from the police officers, who have taken all my details and respectfully asked me to say nothing about it. I don’t know if the matter will be taken further but the police have taken statements from me and other witnesses.

“Archie Knox, and Motherwell coach Gordon Young were involved, attempting to placate matters”.

This is the second time this season that 70-year-old Brown has been involved in a touchline confrontation.

Following Motherwell’s Europa League defeat to Odense in August Brown was virtually boasting about throwing a punch at the Danes director Kim Brink.

The then Motherwell boss admitted: “I think it was their sporting director that got a bit carried away.

“I don’t know why but he came to our dugout. We had a wee bit of a disagreement, putting it euphemistically.

“I got a shove and I had a retaliatory punch. I’m a calm guy but if anyone is old enough to remember when I played the game, I was accused of being quite aggressive.

“I don’t want to get messed about and I wasn’t going to be messed about.”

It’s unlikely the SFA will see the funny side with Strathclyde Police already investigating yesterday’s incident.

Match commander, Superintendent Brian Connel, confirmed: “We’re making enquiries into an incident which occurred at the final whistle.

“We’re not looking at any form of criminal enquiry because there has been no complaint brought to our attention.

“However, after some of the incidents we’ve seen at other football grounds recently it’s only right that we make full enquiries into this and we’re doing that with the assistance of both clubs.

“I’ve spoken with Mr Brown to clarify exactly what did happen. We’ll speak to everyone involved to get to the bottom of it.”

Brown’s a ‘loose cannon’ defo ‘out of control’, I’ll be expecting the HFA to be hitting him with AT LEAST a six match ban!!

Joking aside, the SFA is under scrutiny for not appying their own rules fairly and consistently.

If Brown gets off one with iota less punishment than Lennon for what is I think a more flagrant violation of the SFA code of conduct, Celtic FC should make a further appeal, have Lennon’s previous sanctions quashed or at least downgraded.
