Scott McDonald disappointed by Middlesbrough goal tally

|

Scott McDonald has admitted that he’s disappointed by his goal record at Middlesbrough.

Seven goals from 28 Championship appearances are below par for the striker who scored 51 times in 84 SPL appearances for Celtic.

McDonald is almost certain to leave ‘Boro at the end of the season as Tony Mowbray applies savage wage cuts across the club.

A scoring run towards the end of the season would help out both player and club as ‘Boro attempt to secure Championship safety as soon as possible.

“At the start of the season I wanted to be top scorer in the league,” McDonald admitted.“It’s the same every season.

“To be honest I expected to score a lot more goals this season than I have done.

“I got used to scoring goals for Celtic and you expect it to continue wherever you go.

“That’s my job in the team. That’s what I do, hopefully I will score a few more before the end of the season. I feel confident that I can.”

With Kris Boyd loaned out to Nottingham Forest there are added expectations on McDonald to find the net.

“I thrive on responsibility,” he added. “I don’t have a problem with being the only recognised striker.

“I don’t feel there’s pressure on me. I know that I am doing my best and I’ll continue to do that.

“Obviously it’s disappointing for Leroy (Lita) that he has picked up this injury. I thought we were playing well together, and the goals were coming.

“Hopefully there’ll be more goals to come from us before the end of the season.

McDonald’s season was interrupted by the Asian Cup in January but the striker missed out on international duty last week as Australia pulled off a surprise win away to Germany.

“I was a little bit disappointed I was not called up to the Australian squad,” he admitted. “But I missed a lot of league games in January and I don’t want to miss any more club games.

“Anyway it was my daughter Elle’s first birthday last weekend and I would have missed it if I had been away with Australia.

“Your first priority is always to your family so it was good to be there.”
