The original banner bhoys of 94

|

The wacky Bruce’s and Billy’s at the Perth Rangers Supporters Club seem to have grabbed some attention with their cheeky banner at the Perth Glory friendly match with Celtic.

Ahead of their own side’s 3-0 defeat to German Second Division side Bochum the Perth Rangers supporters came up with the not so original idea of flying a banner over the ground where 17,000 fans, mainly Celtic supporters were watching Gary Hooper and Charlie Mulgrew help Celtic to a 2-0 win.

Hiring a plane and flying a banner over a football ground is hardly something new with Celtic fans setting the standard in 1994 when former Rangers owner Sir David Murray banned hoops fans from Ibrox.

A party mood was anticipated as Rangers fans filled all four stands at Ibrox to watch Walter Smith’s all conquering gladiators dispath Lou Macari’s Celtic on route to another title triumph.

Celtic’s new owner Fergus McCann joined 10,000 fans at Celtic Park watching the reserve clash between the two sides as Macari’s threadbare squad earned a 1-1 draw at Ibrox with a goal coming from the predator boots of John Collins.

Shortly before the match a plane flew over the assembled throng inside Ibrox proudly proclaiming the words ‘HAIL HAIL THE CELTS ARE HERE’.

After seventeen years of thought and with Glasgow’s world reknowned visitors in town it seems that the local Rangers fans were unable to come up with any original thoughts and simply copied the pionerering bhoys of 1994 in their magnificent flying machine.

I liked Lenny’s response, “they’re obsessed with us recently”
Well said Lenny. It’s also worth commenting that the Perth RSC would rather spend money to ridicule than support.

    Should be Rangers Ridiculous Club?

Rangers fans are so fickle it’s unbelievable, only last season at Hamden Rod Stewart organised a fly over in support of Lennon, but going by the Rangers fans reaction they seem to be AWE of this pioneering GENIUS! You would actually think they invented the Aeroplane from their reaction to this.

Remember that day well. the highlight for me was the peat diggers fantastic rendition of an ” irish soldier laddie ” which held up the start of the 2nd half much to the fury of Ian Durrant- hillarious.

As for the Sunday papers the following day , I think it was someone from the Rangers Supporters Association who was quoted as saying the fly past “could have caused a riot!! who were they going to fight with? I know, themselves. nothing changed there then !! hail hail.
