Martin O'Neill Celtic newsMartin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan were united in praise for the Celtic support following last night’s legends match in aid of Oxfam’s East Africa Famine Appeal.

Over 55,000 supporters provided a compelling background for ITV4’s coverage of the match showcasing Celtic and it’s support at it’s very best.

O’Neill and Strachan sat in opposite dug-outs on the night but were both fulsome in their praise for the supporters that made the event special.

“Gordon has known it for a few years and I’ve known it as well,” O’Neill said. “It is extraordinary, absolutely extraordinary.

“It’s like a European night here, it really is sensational. When you consider the economy people have found money for a fantastic cause.

“John Kennedy has given all this money to to cause himself which speaks volumes for a young lad whose career never got going because of serious injury. The crowd is testament to John Kennedy.”

O’Neill’s Celtic successor Strachan added: “It was a special game, you go to play testimonials and you don’t see special atmosphere’s like this. As a television company you can’t have expected to see this.

“Pennies are hard to come by but the supporters have come out like this. It’s great being here, it’s a one off club that’s for sure.”
