David Goodwillie Rangers newsRangers and Dundee United have gone public in the row over the transfer of David Goodwillie to Blackburn Rovers.

The £2m plus deal finally went through late last night with Tannadice chief Stephen Thompson describing Rangers negotiations as ‘absolutely crazy’ revealing that no bid was ever made in writing or by email.

New Rangers owner Craig Whyte has been criticised for his handling of the bid with claims being made that the Ibrox side made seven different offers for the striker.

Responding to Thompson’s claims Whyte said: “We were up against a Premier League club for Goodwillie and we matched their bid but Dundee United didn’t want to sell to us, which is their perogative.”

Goodwillie signed his deal with Blackburn last night with Thompson at pains to explain the events of the last month.

“Their (Rangers) final bid was a great bid, there is no doubt about that,” the Tannadice owner admitted. “But the player was down having his medical at the time. It was absolutely crazy.

“It certainly felt like a saga and it was a stressful last four or five days but the must important thing for me was getting the right deal for Dundee United.

“We took what we believe was the best offer for Dundee United Football Club. I still feel that was the best deal and so does the rest of the board.

“I don’t want to get into an argument with Rangers. I have no issues with Rangers at all, it was verbal, through Ally Russell, who I know very well. He phoned me. We never received anything in writing or by email as nothing was ever agreed.”

Rangers wait until 7 failed bids and Goodwillie is having a medical after agreeing terms with Blackburn before matching Blackburns bid, and are confused by Dundee Utd’s response.
    What a bunch of idiots.

  • Mike Bhoyle says:

One more example by Rankers of how to manipulate the facts…
but will the Laptop Loyal expose their failings.??
    will they feck….
You watch….Dundee Utd. will be the bad guys….
    Only in Scoland….

  • Ciaran says:

Basically, without a written offer, there was NO offer.
Also, when Whyte talks of “Live bids” what is he actually talking about? Maybe one of our intrepid newshounds could ask. Is he trying to buy some players on e-bay?

  • Stevie says:

A we bit of deflection here to hide the truth from thier dignified support. What club in there right mind would let Rearangers pay up on the never never Rearangers go down the tubes and ur money’s lost.

  • Madre de Dios te guarde says:

Had Rangers wanted the boy then they surely should have made the appropiate bid at the right time. From the Rangers’ perspective, I fear that there seems to be an issue about either available cash or competence in terms of negotiation skills. Whatever, there is more to come…

  • Unless those at Rangers sit in a dark room all day they must have known Blackburn were in for him too.

At that point they simply have to match the valuation Dundee Utd put on Goodwillie as Blackburn were willing to. Before then they could have negotiated.

Their several bids and one coming when it was all but impossible to do the deal is clearly an attempt to say, “we tried.”

Their support are eating it up, so you can’t really blame Rangers for pulling it. It keeps the fans off their back.

  • Gary doc says:

who cares? why are you so obsessed with them?

    • bhoylondon67 says:

“Obsessed” seems to be a very common word withh Gers supporters recently, is that anything to do with their obsession with a man who used the word not too long ago?
