The Celtic v Daily Record fall out

internet Celtic news Celtic have this afternoon announced the ‘withdrawl of co-operation’ with the Daily Record- less than two weeks after teaming up to launch a ‘Text for Tommy’ appeal.

The decision follows this morning’s back-page splash which asked: ‘Who’s more hated at Ibrox? Is it Lennon or the taxman?’

On the eve of Celtic’s visit to Ibrox Celtic feel that the content is inflammatory linking together Lennon, hate and Ibrox.

The relationship between a football club and newspaper is often fraught but both sides generally acknowledge that a working relationship is preferable with one party wanting to shift newspapers and the other eager to get their message over to supporters.

That relationship has been fractured at various times with ‘new media’ offering clubs a different way to communicate directly with fans rather than the old fashioned club statement being issued to traditional media sources.

Celtic’s website announcement illustrates a sudden deterioration in the relationship with Scotland’s second biggest selling daily newspaper.

Less than a fortnight ago the Record were given exclusive access to Neil Lennon to get the thoughts of the Celtic manager following the decision of an Edinburgh jury to issue a not proven verdict on his attacker John Wilson.

That was given in return for promoting the ‘Text for Tommy’ appeal aimed at raising £1.2m to complete a new £19.2m complex at the Beatson Centre for Cancer Research in Glasgow.

One day after the launch of the ‘Text for Tommy’ campaign the Record were telling their readers about how Celtic had won an award Best Community and Social Responsibility Programme which isn’t quite the sort of thing that makes the pages of the paper!

While today’s announcement will rock a few boats the precise nature of what a ‘withdrawl of co-operation’ actually means is unclear with the Celtic statement asking: ‘It is only right that the newspaper delivers a suitable retraction and apology.’

Paper media is dying out. 10 years and it will be gone. No great loss.

The trouble is the amount of Celtic supporters who still buy this thing.
So don’t spend the weekend moaning about its contents and then contribute to their upkeep by buying it on Monday.
In this day and age we don’t need printed matter to get our daily fix of the Hoops.
It would also be good when on our next home game there are no traces of that name in the stadium.
