Will the SFA discipline Iain Brines?

Iain Brines referee news With the SFA’s new fast track disciplinary system receiving pass marks all round for the handling of the Steven Naismith case there is one question unanswered.

Will Iain Brines be disciplined?

The referee appeared to have a clear view of the incident as Naismith flashed an elbow at Austin McCann which sent the Dunfermline defender tumbling to the ground.

As promised by Stewart Regan last season the incident was dealt with promptly with Rangers accepting the punishment in good faith.

If Brines, or his assistant referee, did their job properly there would have been a straight red card for the Rangers player and no need for retrospective punishment.

If it had been a one off mistake from Brines it wouldn’t be worth mentioning but if there is one referee in the SPL likely to be at the centre of ridiculous decisions most supporters would put Brines at the top of the list.

Without digging back too far he ‘missed’ Michael Duberry’s double hand ball during the April St Johnstone v Celtic match.

In the first match of the new season he awarded Hibs an indirect free kick when Glenn Loovens kneed the ball back to Lucasz Zaluska. By the time that Brines had caught up with play to overlook the free-kick he had been told of his mistake and quickly arranged a rushed dropped ball out of the way of a Hibs player then swiftly blew the final whistle.

I’d imagine supporters of most clubs will be able to quickly recall howlers from Brines, not just the run of the mill these-things-happen type mistakes but the type that makes you wonder if he’s actually watching the game.

With the new disciplinary system standing up to it’s first test it’s time for the SFA to introduce some fair play to refereeing for the benefit of supporters and officials.

A monthly or even bi-monthly table of referee performances would be very welcome.

As well as informing supporters of the performance of officials it would also provide an incentive for younger up and coming referees. While Brines botches his way through games younger officials are being kept out of the top flight.

Every week at u-19 level there are impressive young referees emerging, capable of keeping up with play and having a dialogue with players and coaches without wanting to be the star of the show.

With Brines clogging up SPL appointments the better younger referees are being frozen out of the top flight leaving the SFA with a very limited pool of referees experienced in handling the top matches which results in Craig Thomson constantly being allocated Celtic’s away matches at Rangers and Hearts.

Brines will be exhonorated, because naismith will not be banned.
Look at the facts: He deliberately elbowed the Dunfermline player in the face, was caught by multiple camera angles doing it, was witnessed by thousands of fans at the game elbowing him, seen by thousands more on TV striking him, so just where is the evidence? Not proven!

    will they fu**~~~~~

nothing much has really changed ~~~~
with awe this new transparency we still
canny see who’s who in that den of bigots
and vile sectarians …. the “NEW” compliance
officer … who is he…. NONE!! jist wan o
the “brothers” daing a bit of moonlighting
so WHO IS IT…. canny say… it’s a secret …. noo where have we seen awe this before….
makes ya ask the question… whit is Dallas daing these days…..

  • Willie Aitkenhead says:

Naismith has been banned for 2 games, utter stupidity for ANY player to think he can doing something like that while being televised and get away with it. Unfortunate for players at this level, while those performing in the lower reaches NOT televised will still have a very good chance of escaping any suspension.

I like the way Rangers are portrayed to have AGREED with the suspension….How in hell could they have disagreed. Player caught bang to rights on TV, clear as day….the clown SHOULD be villified, could easily have broken the Pars players’ jaw….instead he was praised for helping the guy back up !!!

Brines is simply a poor referee, Celtic or Rangers or anyone else for that matter…He thinks the game is about HIM. Time he was downgraded just like that twat Rowbotham.

Our referee’s are about the same poor level as the football. Players & Managers make mistakes all the time. The camera’s amplify any such mistake, really up to the guy in the stand (4th official) to get word to the ref ASAP as I believe they all wired up to communicate to each other.

Too many of our referee’s think they are all powerful, refuse to accept they are wrong and Dallas didn’t help matters.

A league table of referee’s LOL think there would be an almighty relegation battle to be fought out.

He should be asked why he didn’t take any action as he was looking directly at the incident and is caught on camera looking directly at it when it happened so couldn’t possibly deny seeing the elbow by Naismith, undeniable proof of bias.

  • Stevie says:

My thoughts on Brines are if you watch the shame game or should we call it Rangers shame game last season at parkhead, watch Brines first reaction when Sneakie McCoist and Lenny come together at the end of the game. Brines first reaction is to stand with his back to McCoist protectively and push Lenny not once but twice, if that happened on the street It would be a clear case of assault. These pictures tell me all I need to know about Brines.

    • Ciaran says:

He’s a copper. You would think he would be aware of his actions and his body language.

      Maybe not.

      • Stevie says:

Might be a copper doesn’t mean he ain’t an honest mistake merchant.
His pushing of Lenny and protection of Mcmoist says it all to me.
To change the SFA will have to take note of all these incidents and who they benefit.

        • bhoylondon67 says:

That incident with Lennon tells you all you need to know about Brines, standing like a bodyguard in front of Mccoist and then following Lennon to give him another little push. Clearly showed his true colours there.

He should be in bigger trouble than Naismith for allowing that elbow, it’s obvious he seen the incident by his reaction, he starts reacting and then comes to his senses, had a little moment where he knew if he called it he would have no choice but to issue a straight red, he reminds me of Mccurry, he just can’t help himself. He is on camera watching Naismith elbow a player blatantly intentionally in the face, looking directly at it, and yet we’re paranoid!?

    • baxterboy says:

if lenny was blameless in that game then why was he drawn and quartered by his own boss.
brines got into lennon more because he lost it. mccoist wound him up alright but lennon’s reaction made brines action necessary.

      • bhoylondon67 says:

Then where was Brines whem Mccoist was snarling and shouting, being held back trying to confront Lennon in the technical area while Lennon was sitting down and trying to ignore him? It wasn’t Brines holding back Mccoist that’s for sure, or is the fact that incident occurred conveniently eradicated from memory because the press and SFA refused to acknowledge it happened?
I presume your not blind, if you are than apologies, if your not then you have a look at Naismiths elbow and you will see Brines looking directly at the incident, start to react by beginning to raise his arm and changing the direction he was walking in, then inexplicably doing nothing. It is all on camera and undeniable.
I know it’s difficult for you as a Rangers fan to accept bias exists in favour of Rangers in Scotland because it makes ALL of your domestic trophies tainted as there’s now no way of determining which trophies were deserved and which were won through cheating, corruption and bias.

        • baxterboy says:

lennon was out of control and was disciplined by his own club for it – case closed.
if you have played football or watched it regularly you will know that there is rarely a corner or a free kick into the box when an elbow is not thrown; consequently, it’s the practice of most refs not to call it when it has no bearing on the play.
the player was not hurt so contact was minimal, and he did not complain about it – like a man.
if brines had called it, naismith would have got a red and two games. he got two games. and to think rangers would not have won the game without him is, at best – remote.
to get apoplectic over brines in the instances you have cited not only perpetuates your tag of ‘paranoia’ and it also demonstrates that, unlike the player who got the elbow, you are not of the same ilk as those who take it on the chin occasionally – which comes with the terroritory of being a man.
had the player been seriously hurt then naismith deserves to be castigated for it. but an elbow with minimal contact? its obvious you didnt grow up playing in the public parks of springburn, where most tims i know gave it and took without running to their mammy.

  • baxterboy says:

naismith got a two game ban, the ‘non proven’ dude got 8 months.
the endless excuses for not winning the league these last three years.
big jock could handle the refs and the conspiracy theories and every other celtic manager who has brought the considerable honours that celtic have achieved in scotland.
lennon simply does not have it. because he is the focus and not his team.
and punters on here are focusing on everything but lennon as the problem – a recipe for maintenance of the staus quo – no championship and humiliations in europe. please keep it up.

    • Stevie says:

Whether Lenny has it or hasn’t has nothing to do with Brines performance, don’t forget if Brines had acted to the letter of the law Naismiths off, might not have changed the result but we,ll never know. Do we honestly think Brines would make the same mistake if it was a celtic player involved.

      • baxterboy says:

        yes stevie i do.
because rangers and celtic get decisions over the rest of the clubs in scotland in the same way we dont get decisions against euro clubs. the way same man u get them against the wigans. the same way for the smaller clubs the world over.
when barca play glentoran they get decisions they dont get against real.
and that, china, is the reality of life on the planet earth.

        • Stevie says:

Two seasons ago we had no less than 7 managers of SPL teams complain about decision when playing against Rangers that more than 50% of the league.
You Rangers fans really make me sick you,ve been cheating that long you don’t even recognise that you are cheating.
Well it has has taken UEFA to stop your racist and bigoted singing and it,s gonna take HMRC to stop your cheating.
That’s life as we know it in the best wee biggoted country. But not for to much longer.
          TicToc.

        • Stevie says:

          Utter pash

    • bhoylondon67 says:

That’s a complete and utter lie, Lennon takes plenty of stick on here for his team selections and insistence on sticking with Samaras, we just don’t turn into a foaming at the mouth mob when results don’t go our way.
As for humiliating results in europe, Malmo and Maribor are just the tip of the iceberg for Rangers, your european record is shocking over the last decade but God forbid anyone report fairly on Walter Myths atrocious european record, just because the Daily Record doesn’t acknowledge it doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

      • baxterboy says:

and, pray tell, what has the humiliating performances of lennons celtic for more than a year against euro competition have to do with rangers’?

if neil lennon was not worshipped by the celtic support he would have been gone before the neerday game last year- any other manager would have, including icons like kenny.

and if you think the daily record is an enclave of rangers advocacy then you havent talked to many gers fans or read their posts – it is equally despised for its reporting. and, by the way, they make more money pissing off both sets of old firm punters.
