Kenny Dalglish Liverpool newsKenny Dalglish has launched another attack on newspapers after claims that Liverpool were about to cut their losses and sell Andy Carroll back to Newcastle for £10m.

That would represent a £25m loss over 12 months on the striker who was bought last January to replace Fernando Torres.

Speculation has surrounded Carroll from day one of his move to Merseyside with Dalglish regularly questioned about the players lifestyle and attitude.

On the morning of his sides’ Carling Cup semi-final with Newcastle a number of newspapers claimed that Carroll was on his way back to Newcastle in a cut price £10m deal.

During his year as Director of Football at Celtic Dalglish could barely contain his contempt for the media and was back on a familiar theme after last night’s 1-0 win over Manchester City.

“I am worried about the people that invent them (rumours),” the Anfield boss said when questioned last night. “You have absolutely no foundation whatsoever (for the stories]).

I don’t need to justify what is in the paper. I have stood up and always will stand up for the players. You justify your profession.”

Turning to Carroll’s performance Dalglish added: “He worked fantastically hard for us and sacrificed himself for the sake of the team.

“If our players continue to work as hard as they did tonight, every one of them, if we want to move in the right direction then it’s a great start for us.

“For us, we’ve got an advantage, we appreciate the advantage but it won’t mean that we’ve got anywhere until the whistle blows at Anfield.”
