Craig Whyte Rangers newsCraig Whyte has accused Rangers’ former directors of taking the club to ‘the brink’.

A civil war has broken out between the clubs former directors and Whyte who bought the club for £1 from Sir David Murray last May.

The spectre of a £49m tax bill hangs over the club with fresh concerns raised this week about the way that Whyte structured his takeover with confirmation that four years of season ticket money has been mortgaged to Ticketus- the firm that has taken Plymouth Argyle to the brink of liquidation.

After taking over the club Whyte declared that he was confident of winning the tax case but now nine months later he has described the club as a financial mess and on the brink.

Four former directors, Al Johnston, Paul Murray, John Greig and John McClelland have spoken to the Daily Record about their worries over Whyte with the Motherwell born billionaire firing back at his critics today.

Whyte told The Sun: “They have all been sitting there for years making a financial mess of Rangers.

Now they are throwing stones at the man who is in trying to clear it up!

“They are slagging me off but where was Paul Murray when the club was up for sale for three years? How much money did Alastair Johnston put into Rangers?”

Whyte also claims that McClelland and former chief executive Martin Bain benefited from the Employee Benefit Trusts.

He added: “They took big salaries out and operated a tax scheme that has driven this club to the brink.

“There is no question that there is a vendetta against me by the old board. They wanted the club to themselves and I spoiled their plans. Now instead of getting on with their lives their anger is increasing.

“These guys don’t get a hard time and I find that unbelievable. Some people are rewriting history and saying they did a good job. What planet are those people living on?”

Rangers have still to produce audited accounts for the year to June 2011 and failed to hold an AGM last year.

You know what Joe, this is all terribly
    undignified….

The present owner of the ‘land with good potential for development’ is stirring things up nicely for those of us who enjoy a good soap opera.

The old guard, including Mr. ‘no surrender’
are doing a great job of busting the myth that the quintessential British club run their business affairs, personal lives etc with the greatest of dignity and decorum.

I cant wait for the next episode…..

Come on lads, trouser leg up, breast out, start behaving like ‘good rangers’ men.

Where does the term ‘Billionaire’ to describe Craig Whyte come from?

He’s no such thing and if the stories around the takeover of Rangers and the subsequent mortgaging of season tickets is true then perhaps he’s not even a millionaire.
