Loan striker Daryl Murphy scored his second goal of the season on Tuesday night as Ipswich Town hammered West Ham 5-1 at Portman Road.
Murphy put the homeside two up in the 44th minute but there was still time for a goal at each end before Ipswich ran out comfortable winners.
The win lifts Ipswich into sixth bottom place but with just 31 points from 28 games Paul Jewell’s side have a lot of work to do to ensure their Championship future.
“It was a great result but even sweeter to get a performance too,” the Ipswich boss admitted.
“West Ham are a very good team and I’ve got no doubts they’ll get promoted. We started well and then rode our luck from one or two set-plays. But overall it was a victory for hard work and determination.
“It was a great tonic for everyone but we’ve had false dawns before this season. One swallow doesn’t make a summer and we’ve got another tough game at Coventry on Saturday. We’ll go into it with a bit more confidence now, though.”
On Tuesday night Josh Thompson helped Chesterfield through to the final of the Johnstones Paint Trophy.
Leading 2-1 from the first leg against Oldham the League One strugglers won 1-0 at Boundary Park to book a final place against Swindon or Barnet.
Paulo di Canio’s side drew the first leg 1-1 away to Barnet and are strong favourites to book a Wembley date against Chesterfield.
