Johan Mjallby Celtic newsJohan Mjallby has been analysing Celtic’s Hampden failings.

Sub standard refereeing performances were a big factor in the defeats from Kilmarnock and Hearts but Neil Lennon’s assistant has also been looking at where Celtic can improve.

A combination of missed chances, poor form and bad decisions contributed to both defeats leaving Celtic with ‘only’ the SPL trophy to show for their efforts over the season.

At the start of the season everyone at the club would have been delighted by that trophy haul but as a former player Mjallby knows the expectations at the club.

“We know how teams are going to play against us,” Neil Lennon’s assistant told Celtic tv. “We have to break them down and not waste our chances, getting the first goal helps a lot especially in important games.

“We know that we’d have most of the possession so we need to take our chances better. We were wasteful against Hearts and in the League Cup Final we also missed a couple of sitters.

“The teams that come up against us have a lot of respect for us, their chance is to stay tight and try to hit us on the counter.”

After turning around a 15 point deficit in the league Mjallby is confident that the current players can take on board the lessons from Hampden.

He added: “The players know the importance of playing for Celtic, you can have a bad game but you must always fight hard for the team.

“When we were struggling earlier in the season we didn’t panic, we didn’t change the training but the players started to work a bit harder as a team. If you earn your right to play your quality will shine through.”
