transfer window Celtic newsTartan Army favourite James McFadden has been freed by Everton after failing to make an impact in his second spell at Goodison Park.

The 29-year-old has long been linked with a move to Celtic but turned down an offer from Neil Lennon in October to return to Everton.

McFadden started just three matches and made five substitute appearances for Everton and was one of six players released by Davie Moyes on Friday.

Alex McLeish paid Everton £4.75m to sign the midfielder for Birmingham City in January 2008 but his spell at St Andrews was blighted by injury and resulted in his release a year ago as Birmingham were relegated from the Premiership.

Neil Lennon had hoped to assess McFadden in training before offering a deal but the former Motherwell man opted to go back to Everton.

Discussing the situation Lennon said: “We are hoping he is going to come up and train for a few days.

“He’s a player that I’ve liked for quite a while, he is a very creative player and has good qualities and he is available.

“He’s got goals and is a good character. So we are hoping that we can get something sorted out in the next few days.

“He’s been out for a while but I know he has done some rigorous tests down south and passed them all.

“It would be remiss to sign him on the back of that so we will have a look at him first.”

McFadden made the last of his 48 Scotland appearances in the 2-0 win over Macedonia in September 2009.

I wouldn’t bother with him….we should be looked ahead and his best days are long past. Kris Commons offers far more invention & a goal threat as well which Faddy doesn’t have.

We don’t need more bench warmers, we need players who can lift the standard even more, want to push themselves to the next level. McFadden is happy to pick up money for doing little, we need players with hunger, desire, ambition.

No way he had his chance to play for his boyhood heroes and never took it anyway he isn’t the player he was a few yrs ago

  • KevinBarry says:

Aye right! He’s had his chance.

  • Don’t even think about getting out the bargepole. I believe you should only get one chance to say ‘no’ to Celtic. Once said it’s boat burning time. Look elsewhere. Besides there are younger and better and probably cheaper.
