Kilmarnock chairman favours commercial benefits over sporting integrity

SPL Celtic newsKilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston has revealed that he’ll be voting in favour of admitting a Rangers newco into the SPL.

Bill Miller has been given preferred bidder status by administrators Duff and Phelps with the American going on record to say that his bid is subject to no sporting sanctions being applied to the Ibrox side.

The SPL and SFA are currently investigating the way that Rangers have been operating with the club appealing against a transfer embargo despite owing money to clubs in Scotland, England, Italy, France and Sweden.

Miller’s hopes of taking over the club require the co-operation of Craig Whyte and agreeing a CVA with debtors that include HMRC and Ticketus.

Should Rangers survive they will be a shadow of the team that they have been over the last 25 years but despite that reality it seems that Johnston is going to go for a short term fix and risk the season ticket backlash of his own supporters.

With a newco banned from European football for three years Rangers are likely to be competing with League One clubs in terms of wages to offer players.

“Members see the commercial benefits of having Rangers, even as a newco,” Johnston told Radio Scotland.

“The clubs are mindful of a sporting integrity aspect but the commercial benefits may outweigh that.

“We need more talks before we can move on. There are still lots of discussions to be had with the SPL and with Bill Miller over his plans for Rangers.

“We need more clarity on his plan and how it will be structured.”

With no sign of a verdict in the big tax case and a number of legal actions underway there is little sign of clarity on the crisis at Rangers leaving the SPL in limbo unwilling to decide between a tained commercial deal and sporting integrity.

It’s going to be easy to vilify him. I’d like to myself!

Truth is he us saying in public what other Directors won’t yet admit.

That includes Peter Lawwell & Celtic.

    Silence speaks volumes!

Gerry away u go .for what these cheats have done to Celtic cost us many millions I hope they go to junior divisons and not just celtic

        I do too!

Let me know when it’s happened & don’t hold your breath!

All thats needed for evil to prevail is that good men do nothing!

        Heard from Celtic recently?

as much as i despise Rangers. if they are in 3rd Division the tv deal will be cancelled & attendances will be woeful for 3 to 4 years & league will die. There is no doubt they’ll be in SPL next year, no doubt whatsoever. They should be deducted minimum of 15 pts every season for 3 seasons & only allowed to buy players till they pay what cash they owe to other clubs, Hearts, Rapid Vienna, Dunfermline, Orebro, etc

I have been thinking about Michael Johnston and his clubs predicament.

I think I have a solution for them. The strategy is to buy star players on small wages but big discretionary payments and go for 1st or 2nd spot in the SPL.

This will open up the riches of European football to them and provide the fans with great adventures.

This strategy only works if success on the field is assured.

In the event of failure we have to revert to plan B

This means that we keep all the debt in the company and when it gets too much to handle we simply open a newco then transfer all the assets to this newco and leave all the creditors high and dry as we wave them goodbye and take our place in the same league as before but this time with no debt at all just assets- I cannot see why that won’t work – can you?

We should be absolutely clear on what this vote will decide…

    1) That Celtic and / or Rangers CANNOT be relegated EVER

    2) That Celtic and / or Rangers CANNOT finish outwith the top 6

If either situation should arise then rules will be amended, in Case 1 the league shall be expanded, for Case 2 – The split MUST be scrapped during the course of the season.

Do you think fans of ANY club will accept this crap as this is EXACTLY what they are voting in.

Kilmarnock – Will NEVER receive another thin dime of my money….neither will the SFA semi-finals, finals, Internationals are 100% boycotted no matter the occasion.

You cannot have a ‘competition’ if the rules do not apply to everyone competing. The SPL would become football’s WWE wrestling. Why would Celtic want to play in such a league?

The SPL means little now rig it to suit one or even two clubs and it is truly worthless. It will die anyway. International ridicule will also be poured down upon Scotland.

If Lawwell votes yes I am no longer a Celtic supporter. Rangers 1872-2012, Celtic 1888-2012.

To save rangers they are willing to detroy every club in scotland and the game itself. Deplorable.
