Callum McGregor hat-trickCeltic have qualified for the second phase of the Hong Kong Sevens at the expense of West Ham.

A late equaliser from Callum McGregor against the Hammers earned Celtic a point which was enough to secure second place in Group B and a slot in the quarter finals.

Danny McGrain and Stevie Frail’s side beat local outfit HKFC Captain’s Select 3-0 before drawing 1-1 with Leicester City and West Ham.

That was enough to take the hoops through to the next phase on five points behind group winners Leicester City.

In tomorrows quarter final action Celtic are likely to face Aston Villa or Newcastle United.

Group B was the only section that contained three British clubs with HKFC Captain’s Select finishing pointless in fourth place.

Goals from John Herron, Jackson Irvine and Marcus Fraser saw Celtic ease their way into the tournament in the opening match while Leicester beat West Ham.

Bahrudin Atajic scored against Leicester leaving Celtic requiring a draw against West Ham to progress into Sunday’s quarter finals.

West Ham looked to be on course to progress but McGregor’s late equaliser earned Celtic the point that they needed to advance into the last eight.

Rangers qualified as winners of Group A on seven points and will face the runners up in Group C which contains Chelsea and three local sides leaving the door open for a possible Celtic v Rangers final.

Celtic’s quarter-final match kicks-off at 12.15 local time, if they’d lost to West Ham it would have meant an 8am start in the shield section of the tournament tomorrow.

Excellent start to the tourney against some stiff opposition. I see Rangers have managed to beat TWO cricket clubs and drew 0-0 with Sunderland.

Villa have a superb record in this tourney, so expect them to qualify but either Villa or Newcastle will again be a good test for the young guns.

All great experience for them though
