Jackie McNamara newsA Celtic XI will take part in a four team tournament staged by Partick Thistle and also involving Everton and Airdrie United.

The ARR Craib Cup will take place at Firhill on July 21/22 when the Celtic first team face Ajax in the Amsterdam Arena.

Stevie Frail and Danny McGrain will be in charge of the Celtic squad which is likely to be mainly made up from last season’s double winning u-19 squad.

Celtic will kick the tournament off at noon on the Saturday with a game against Thistle followed by Everton v Aidrie at 12.45.

The two winners will meet on the Sunday at 2.45 following a third place play-off at noon.

Thistle are managed by former Celtic duo Jackie McNamara and Simon Donnelly and signed up former hoops defender Stephen O’Donnell last season.

The two clubs met at Firhill last season with Greig Spence scoring for the visitors in a 1-1 draw.

Last season in his first season in management McNamara steered Thistle to 6th place in the First Division as Ross County ran away with the title.

Thistle resumed training yesterday with McNamara looking forward to the season ahead.

He said: “We had a running test yesterday morning and all the boys have come back from their break in good shape. The days of players coming back really unfit are gone to be honest.

“They are a good, professional group. They have had a holiday and time to relax, but they are keen to get back into it.

“We gave them plans to stick to so that they weren’t coming back in and starting from scratch.

“They have got a bit of fitness behind them. We will be doing a lot of sports science with them.

“We had the yo-yo test on Monday morning to test their fitness levels and it was the same last year. In the afternoon, it was runs with the ball.

“You are not running as quickly when you have the ball at your feet, but you are having to work harder because you are focusing on the ball.”

Ticket are priced at £15 per day or £10 for concessions.
