Scottish League newsMorton have gone on record with their opposition to Sevco being parachuted into next season’s First Division.

Following the lead of Raith Rovers and Falkirk the Greenock side have reacted to speculation that the SFA are trying to fast-track Charles Green’s club into the top tier of the Scottish Football League.

Green should discover tomorrow whether his club have been granted SFA membership with former Rangers defender John Brown doubtful that Green owns the title deeds to Ibrox.

SFA chief Stewart Regan has been trying to railroad through plans to merge the SPL and SFL but the Morton board won’t play any part in turning next season into a title procession for the Green machine as they bounce into the SPL at the first time of asking.

Morton chairman Douglas Rae said: “There has been much speculation and discussion regarding exactly where the Newco Rangers will ply their trade next season.

“A meeting of the member clubs of the Scottish Football League will take place next week when we will be updated on the current situation and have the opportunity to debate not only this matter but also the wider issues arising from it.

“Under the current SFL rules, any club making an application for membership should be admitted to the Third Division.

“I personally see no reason to make any exception to that at this time and would therefore vote accordingly.

“I believe the current situation has presented us with an opportunity to consider and review the way forward for Scottish football, and as such it is more vital than ever to look at the “bigger picture” and the options for change which will no doubt present themselves over the coming weeks and months.

“My personal hope is that any changes arising from this tumultuous period in the history of Scottish football can be implemented for the long-term good of the game.”

If a proposal is made to invite Sevco into the First Division it will need the approval of 23 of the 30 SFL clubs, with three of the leading First Division clubs going public with their opposition that is unlikely to be reached.

A place in the Third Division is more likely to be voted through and appears to have the backing of Rangers fans even though it will be a newclub taking the place of the club that finished last season second in the SPL.
