Martin O'Neill newsMartin O’Neill has reassured Sunderland supporters that he’s active in the transfer market.

Despite losing four of last season’s first team squad O’Neill has only brought in Carlos Cuellar on a free transfer since the transfer window opened.

No major deals have been completed in England with Manchester City yet to enter the market while in London Arsenal and Spurs are resigned to losing Robin van Persie and Luca Modric.

O’Neill used to frustrate Celtic and Villa fans with his laid back attitude to the transfer windows but has told Sunderland fans that a few moves are underway.

“We’re in a situation where we know exactly who we are after and we are in the process of trying to acquire them,” O’Neill claimed.

“It’s quite possible that many clubs will look to do their transfer business later this time around, they may well be wanting to take their time over their moves.

“They may well be waiting to see what happens with a few high profile transfers they could be anticipating in the market and then look to exploit whatever situation arises from that but that’s not a scenario that applies to us.”

O’Neill added: “The aim is to get players in before the new season because we want to bed them in if possible.

“And certainly we want to get the players we want in before the transfer deadline closes.”

Sunderland start their season away to Arsenal on August 18 followed up by Reading at home before the transfer window closes.
