internet Celtic newsReal Radio has axed it’s football phone in and admitted that the format is no longer sustainable.

The late Jimmy Sanderson set the standard for radio phone-ins in the early 80s with his high pitched opinions lapped up by fans and non fans as he delivered opinions to a massive audience on Radio Clyde.

In recent times you could take your pick from three different phone-ins five days a week as the demand grew beyond the traditional Saturday slot.

Competition from the internet has changed the landscape with the fast moving message boards and independence of the pod-casts putting every area of mainstream media under pressure.

Last season Real Radio paired Alan Rough and Derek Johnstone together on their phone in but after a summer review the show has been axed.

A statement on the station website said: “The Real Radio Football Phone-In will not be returning to Real Radio and we understand that this news won’t be welcomed by some listeners, but we would like to explain the reasons for the changes we are making.

“When the show started more than a decade ago it was among only a handful of debate shows available to fans.

“Now this type of content is widely available whenever and wherever people want it on many different platforms, such as internet forums, fan sites, specialist tv and radio stations and social media.

“This has no doubt contributed to the gradual decline in audience to The Real Radio Football Phone-In.

“In its place we will be introducing music led programming, consistent with the rest of the day’s output and of appeal to the widest audience.

“We would like to thank our sports presenters for their passion for the show and commitment to the station over the years and wish them the very best for the future.

“We do hope you continue to enjoy listening to Real Radio and understand the reasons for these necessary changes.”

Life goes on unaffected at the BBC with pundits falling over pundits with BBC Scotland sending more experts to the London Olympics than there are Scottish competitors.
