SFA football newsCeltic duo Ciaran Lafferty and Steven Boyd were on target as Scotland’s u-16 side beat Bulgaria 2-0 to claim third place in the Valerie Ivanov Tournament in Moscow.

Mark Wotte’s side had to settle for the third placed play-off after losing to Ukraine on Friday having beaten Latvia and Turkey earlier in the competition.

Celtic’s Sam Wardrop, Aiden McIlduff and Ryan Caird were in the starting XI alongside Lafferty and Boyd while Aiden Nesbitt and Calvin Miller appeared as substitutes.

After the match Wotte said: “Overall I’m very pleased with how we have performed in this tournament.

“In this match, we displayed fantastic spirit to bounce back from our unlucky defeat to Ukraine yesterday. I have seen the qualities which this squad is made of over here.

“We have one more friendly against Poland in September before the Sky Sports Victory Shield and I am very encouraged by the players attitude and performance here in Russia.

“It has been a very well run tournament with excellent facilities and I know our players will have benefited hugely from the experience.”

Over in Norway Mikey Miller and John Herron were on the losing side as Scotland lost out 2-1 to Norway’s u-19 side.

Right-back Miller captained the Scotland side who had beaten Norway 3-2 two days earlier.

On Tuesday Scotland’s u-17 side face Belgium at Stirling Albion’s Forthbank Stadium with Jordan Hart, Mark Barrowman, Calum Watters, Luke Donnely, Liam Henderson and Conor McManus in the Scotland squad.
