Forgotten defender in demand

Josh Thompson newsAberdeen and Portsmouth have made enquires about Josh Thompson.

Tony Mowbray gave Thompson his debut shortly after paying Stockport £250,000 for the then 19-year-old who went on to start 19 matches under Mowbray and Neil Lennon.

Thompson spent last season on loan at Peterbrough and Chesterfield where he helped the club to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley but was unable to save the club from relegation.

Aberdeen have expressed an interest in a loan deal but it’s believed that the player and Celtic are looking for a permanent move.

Portsmouth are also interested but nothing can be discussed until the clubs’ future is secured.

Despite the departures of Glenn Loovens, Daniel Majstorovic and Darren O’Dea there was no place for Thompson in Lennon’s pre-season plans with the defender working with the development squad.

Loovens has joined Real Zaragoza, Majstorovic has returned to Sweden with AIK Stockholm with O’Dea joining Barry Robson in the MSL with Toronoto.

O’Dea has been on loan at Reading, Ipswich and Leeds over the last two seasons but has no concerns about quitting the UK for a new career in Canada.

“I was speaking to a lot of clubs over the last while and I knew that I had to make the right decision and not rush into anything, but I have signed for Toronto now,” he told the Evening Herald.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s a big move but it’s a challenge for me and I think it’s the right thing to do.

“I don’t think people in Ireland and Britain realise just how good the MLS is and where that league is going. I think it’s going to explode. The facilities over there are top class, the investment into the game is huge and it’s going places. Robbie Keane going there was a big deal.

“Now you have Andy O’Brien heading out there too as he joined Vancouver Whitecaps in the last few days, so it’s a good league with good players in it and I wanted to be part of it.”

Celtic have released 3 centre backs in the summer and possibly another in Josh Thomson and yet we still in my opinion need a dominant centre back to play alongside Thomas Rogne , i prefer Mulgrew at left back as i think he is a better defender than izzy

I thought Josh done as well as he could have when he was thrown in at the deep end during the Mowbray disaster, and that was without an experienced head beside him, but for some reason Lenny doesn’t seem to rate him at all. Perhaps because he was part of the Ross County.
Mind you, so was Sammy and he is still sand-dancing his way round the SPL.

Good luck to Josh wherever he ends up.

Thomson doesnt so much lack pace, he’s none, ie Ross County semi, and isn’t good enough for Celtic, and unlikely to get better than English league 1.
