Martin O'Neill newsMartin O’Neill is unconcerned by Sunderland’s pre-season scoring drought.

The former Celtic boss had a £12m bid for Steven Fletcher rejected by Wolves last week as he tries to solve the clubs problems in front of goal.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Leicester highlighted the need for striking reinforcements with only Carlos Cuellar added to last seasons squad

“We haven’t scored too many goals in pre-season, but that problem existed before we started and it’s something we hope to rectify in the next few weeks,” O’Neill stated after the defeat at Leicester.

“For me now, watching the DVDs of the games, I’m not too concerned about pre-season. I would have liked performances to have been better but if we had won two or three of the games would that have hidden things? I don’t think so.

“You might tell me the lack of goals highlights it, and it may well do. But throughout, we’ve been saying we need to strengthen.

“It would have been nice to have had a full complement of players and everything sorted out so they got to know each other’s play but the strengthening of the side is obvious to everyone.”

O’Neill added: “Between now and the end of the transfer deadline we have to try and improve the squad. Things will develop and happen, but we cannot be sure of the day.

“In terms of signing players, the only player we have taken on this summer so far has been Carlos Cuellar.

“We hope to rectify that situation over the next few weeks and anyone can see that we need a bit more strength. That will come, I am hoping, with some additions.

“I am hopeful things will get done, but I genuinely cannot put a time on it – the last thing we want to do is to build up supporters’ hopes.”

Martin has left signings to the absolute deadline in every team that he has been involved with. His methods won’t be changing any time soon I reckon. Have faith in the man guys, he’s been around the block more than once.
