Red Card Celtic newsKilmarnock boss Kenny Shiels has reported referee Euan Norris to the SFA over an after-match remark.

Norris, who was confronted by Neil Lennon at the end of last season’s Celtic v Hearts Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden, was at his erratic best when it came to penalties with Inverness Caley Thistle awarded two penalties at Rugby Park.

Cammy Bell saved a first half penalty from Grame Shinnie but was red-carded after the break with Billy McKay scoring from the subsequent penalty kick.

“I went to shake hands with the referee and I didn’t say a word,” Shiels explained.

“I kept my emotions in check as much as I could and then he said something sarcastic so I reported him to John Connelly (SPL match delegate) at the end.

“I don’t know what he said but it was something flippant and I will be reporting him to John Fleming (head of referee development) as well because I am not happy about it.

“I am sorry, I can’t talk about officials. I am not allowed to tell the truth. Vincent Lunny (SFA’s compliance officer) won’t allow me to tell the truth. It is the only industry in the world where you are not allowed to tell the truth.”

The away win completed a great week for Terry Butcher with Shiels full of admiration for his opposite number.

“I know Terry was complaining that they did not get penalty kicks and I don’t think he’s got into any trouble yet,” the Kilmarnock boss added.

“He’s politically unbelievably good, how he deals with the press and how he deals with referees.

“It’s working for him and his work with the referees is outstanding and he’s done really well there – I wish I knew the secret.”

  • williebhoy says:

Norris might be a poor referee but Shiels defence of “I don’t know what he said but it was flippant” won’t hold up, only serves to make Shiels look stupid.

If he has something to say, especially the truth come out and say it – Don’t hide behind excuses.

Got the breaks last week, now it’s gone against them such is life.
