Malky Mackay Cardiff newsMalky Mackay started 2013 as he ended the old year- by praising his promotion chasing side.

Cardiff’s 1-0 win away at Birmingham was watched by over 2,200 travelling supporters with the Welsh side sitting seven points clear of second placed Hull City thanks to four straight wins over the festive period.

No-one knows the division better than the former Celtic defender who looks on course for the Premiership in his second season in the Welsh capital.

“Cardiff City hadn’t won at St Andrews since the 1960s,” Mackay noted. “It is never easy against Birmingham City away and this was another tough test.

“The pitch is not the way I have seen it in the past and did not lend itself to flowing football, but we came through and kept a 10th clean sheet which I am delighted with.

“Four wins out of four over Christmas and New Year is a fantastic record. We are making sure we are preparing for all matches properly and chalking them. We have consistency and momentum.

“It is not a situation where we can expect to click every week, but we work hard and play with pride.

“We kept Birmingham pretty quiet in the second half and our keeper didn’t have a save to make.”

Lower down the division Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich lost 3-0 at home to Brighton just three days after winning 2-0 away to Wolves.

Tony Mowbray’s Middlesbrough remain in a play-off spot despite losing 3-1 at Derby while Alex McLeish is still looking for his first win as Nottingham Forest boss after being beaten 3-0 at managerless Blackburn Rovers.
