Shaun Maloney Celtic newsShaun Maloney has extended his contract with Wigan until the end of the 2014/15 season.

The forward left Celtic in August 2011 in a £1m deal having failed to recapture his form following a brief spell at Aston Villa.

Maloney took some time to break into the Wigan side last season but played a major role in their escape from relegation scoring vital goals against Liverpool and Manchester United.

This season he has scored twice in 20 Premiership appearances with manager Roberto Martinez delighted by his contribution to the side.

“Shaun is one of the most technically gifted British players that you will find,” the Wigan boss said.

“On top of his style and footballing flair, his work-rate and purpose in his performances make him a key member of our future at Wigan Athletic.

“From the first day he arrived, his professionalism and determination to succeed has been outstanding and an example for the younger members of the group to follow.

“I’m sure the fans are looking forward to watching him continue to enjoy his football at Latics for a long time.”

Wigan have a strong contingent of former SPL players including captain Gary Caldwell.

Former Hamilton duo James McCarthy and James McArthur are regulars in Martinez’s side who are currently fourth bottom of thre table.

Tomorrow Wigan take on Sunderland with Maloney coming up against Martin O’Neill who gave him his Celtic debut as a teenager at Ibrox 12 years ago. In midweek Wigan progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win away to Bournemouth.
