Dundee United chief: Don't blame us

|

Stephen Thompson Dundee United newsDundee United chairman Stephen Thomson has told Rangers fans to look elsewhere for the demise of their club.

Charles Green has given his backing to a supporters boycott of today’s Scottish Cup tie as Ibrox fans bizarrely blame the Tannadice club for their current predicament.

The exact nature of United’s crimes is hard to define but seem to also cover the abandonment of a match in 2009 despite attending fixtures at Tannadice since then.

While Dave Murray and the old Rangers board largely escape scrutiny and criticism Thomson has asked supporters to review the events of last year before they pin the blame of liquidation and Third Division football at his door.

“I was on the SPL board at the time when things arose,” the United chief recalled. “The other clubs didn’t put them in the position they are in. It’s up to their own fans to decide how they got where they are. I don’t want to re-write the history books.”

Looking at today’s match he added: “I’m disappointed because it’s a big game for both clubs and would have been a full house,” he said. “It’s still going to be a good crowd here.

“It would have been a great advert for Scottish football, which I still think it will be. But they have made their decision, they are entitled to do that and I wouldn’t like to enter into that kind of discussion.”

New manager Jackie McNamara will be in charge of United for the first time in today’s match.

I don’t like Thompsons attitude regarding attendance. It would have been a full house? Surely with very few if them travelling the Arabs would have snapped up the remaining tickets to give their team a tremendous backing. Or maybe they won’t spend money to watch their team play a third division side.

The game will descend into farce if both united and rangers fans are in the same stand. Its basic health and safety 101. Anyway, itl be good to see a 3rd division side that thinks it should be in the EPL, getting a tanking off an SPL side. HH
