The Spence connection

|

Liam Gormley Greig Spence Celtic newsGreig Spence can’t wait to get his chance to impress Celtic.

The Raith striker was the driving force to the 2010 youth team double with an amazing scoring run for Stevie Frail’s side.

A pre-season injury in 2010 set the strikers career back before departing Celtic last summer after a season on loan at Hamilton Accies.

In his final appearance for Celtic he scored in the 2011 SFA Youth Cup Final against Rangers and remains in touch with many of his former team-mates.

“I was in the same group as Tony Watt and James Forrest, as well as Marcus Fraser and Joe Chalmers who are pushing into the first team just now,” Spence explained.

Callum Bagshaw Greig Spence Celtic news“I’m still in touch with a few of the lads. I’ve been texting Tony this week because I’m getting him to sign a shirt for my local club, Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts, where I started out.

“It was fantastic to see Tony do what he did against Barcelona. Most boys at Celtic believe they can do something like that if they get the chance.”

“When you are at Celtic you need certain breaks, for your face to fit and for people to rate you.

“I was disappointed to leave, but I saw it as a chance to play regularly elsewhere. Injuries didn’t help me and you never know what might have been.”

Spence will have to find a way past Fraser Forster if he is to become a hero tomorrow with the Geordie making his first appearance since the winter break.

Emilio Izaguirre and Georgios Samaras will both be missing after picking up injuries in the 4-1 win over Kilmarnock.

Best of luck to Greig, a real penalty box striker.
Who knows what the future may hold, although the chances of a return to Celtic are minimal. I hope he goes on to enjoy a long & successful career and makes the most of every opportunity to progress in the game. Clubs are always crying out for goalscorers so keep hitting the net…just not today.
