Izzaguirre leads the race to Rio

|

World Cup 2014 newsEmilio Izaguirre is on course for Brazil next summer following the 2-2 draw between Honduras and Mexico.

It looked bleak for the home side when Manchester United’s Chicharito fired Mexico into a two goal lead but Honduras scored in the 77th and 80th minutes to earn a draw after Izaguirre had been substituted.

Honduras opened the final qualifying stage with a 2-1 home win over the USA and are sitting at the top of the six team group with four points from two matches.

On Tuesday Honduras travel to face Panama who have drawn both of their opening matches against Costa Rica and Jamaica.

The top three teams all qualify directly for Brazil with the fourth placed team going into a qualifier against a country from another continent.

In South America Venezuela went down to a 3-0 defeat against Argentina with Miku booked despite only playing for the last ten minutes.

Argentina, Columbia and Ecuador look like claiming the first three qualifying places with Venezuela, Uruguay, Chile and Peru scrapping for the fourth qualifying place with the fifth place side facing a play-off tie.

Closer to home Georgios Samaras was in the Greece side that disappointingly lost 3-1 away to Bosnia.

In Tel Aviv Beram Kayal played the full 90 minutes as Israel enjoyed a battling 3-3 draw with Christian Ronaldo’s Portugal with loan Celt Rami Grshon scoring Israel’s third goal. According to the FIFA website Rami’s first name is Null!

After a disastrous start to the group that included a draw away to Azerbaijan and a 4-0 defeat at home to Russia Israel are now sitting second in their group ahead of Tuesday’s visit to winless Northern Ireland.

In Group C Mikel Lustig was substitued at half-time during Sweden’s 0-0 draw at home to Ireland with both those countries and Austria in a fight for second place to runaway leaders Germany.

Finally at Hampden Joe Ledley helped Wales do the double over Scotland with the visitors well worth their 2-1 win over Charlie Mulgrew’s side under the new management of Gordon Strachan.
