John Herron Celtic newsNo one enjoys a celebration more than John Herron.

At Hampden on Wednesday the midfielder wore the armband as Celtic beat Dunfermline to win the SFA Youth Cup at Hampden.

Climbing the steps to collect a trophy is every players dream but when the final whistle went Herron’s first thoughts were for injured skipper Marcus Fraser.

The young defender suffered cruciate ligament damage in the closing stages of the quarter-final win over Aberdeen and won’t be back in action till the end of the year.

Herron and Fraser have came through the ranks together at Celtic with the midfielder happy to share the Hampden glory.

“After the game I said to Marcus that I was captain for the match but you are the main captain and I want you to go up with me,” Herron explained.

“He said that he was honoured to go up and do it. I told the coaches and they said it was a good touch.

“It was hard to see Marcus get injured, especially at the stage he was playing at, just after getting a chance in the first team. It was in my mind if we won to do that.”John Herron Celtic news

Herron added: “Last season I scored a goal and probably played better but captaining the side at Hampden was a privelidge.

“I don’t think that any team has had a harder run to a final, we put our heads down and took it game by game. We had to prove ourselves in every match and that’s us got four in a row which is fantastic for the club.”
