Defender makes Belgian move

Rami Gershon newsRami Gershon has joined Belgian side Beveren.

The defender moved to Celtic on loan in January but only made three top team appearances, including a goal on his debut at Inverness Caley Thistle.

Gershon was brought in as cover for Emilio Izaguirre but despite the inconsistent form of the Honduran he was never able to convince Neil Lennon to give him a regular run in the team.

Despite his lack of first team action Gershon has maintained his place in the Israeli international side and scored in the 3-3 draw with Portugal, including Christian Ronaldo, in March.

A couple of Israeli sides were also interested in the 24-year-old but having already played in Belgium for Standard Liege and Kortrijk moving to Beveren had obvious attractions.

After signing a two year deal Gershon said: “Beveren was the best option for me. I want to play. I’ve heard good things about the club and Glen de Boeck (Beveren coach). This is a family club with good facilities and nice fans.”

Gershon is the fifth player to depart Celtic with Miku and Lassad already gone with Thomas Rogne and Paddy McCourt out of contract at the end of the month.

Speaking in March Gershon said: “I want to succeed to make the club want me to stay because I’m happy here as long as I can.

“In the first two months I’ve had two injuries. I think I can play much, much better and I have the motivation to show it.

“Football is a game of pressure, even if I don’t have a longer contract then there is still pressure.

“I want to accomplish my mission to stay here. I’ve never played for a team that have so many supporters in a big and beautiful stadium like that and it must be amazing to play in front of them.”

Unfortunately for Rami he never earned a new deal at Celtic with Beveren the next club to feature on his CV.

sorry it didn’t work out for you Rami, but good luck with your new team.
    HAIL HAIL

  • Liamcfc says:

    Another pointless signing

  • Gav says:

    Never really got a chance!!

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

Players come and go. Some signings work out, some don’t.
ALL managers sign players who don’t, whether it’s Big Jock or MO’N. Cascarino is the most sited but there have been many more, Graveson, Jarosik, highly rated exciting signings who failed to live up to the hype and others who were riddiculed when signed, like Henke and Lubo………the rest is history as they say.
They also say you have to kiss a few frogs and considering the gems we’ve signed over the past few seasons it has been exactly that. A few.
I really can’t understand how any Celtic supporter, and there are a few, can slag of Celtics signings and/or scouting system all things considered.

Good luck Rami and thak you for your efforts.

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

    Cited even.

  • Declan Forde says:

A perfectly logical contribution from Sweeney Hughes. Some signings work and some don’t .It’s the same at every club.I too fail to understand any supporter who criticises our club which is not to say that they’re not entitled too.But then I am one of those whom Sir Bob Kelly was referring to.i.e.Celtic is a way of life.

    • Andybhoy says:

That’s fair comment, some make it some don’t, but there are also players who don’t seem to be given a fair chance. Gershon and Lassad fall into that category, both players had a bit of quality about them and we only really got to see little glimpses of it.

Any honest Celtic fan will admit there were times last season in league fixtures when some players were just going through the motions because they knew their first team positions were safe regardless.

Maybe if we had given guys like Gershon and Lassad more game time they could have established themselves as first picks, and if not at least it would have sent out a message to other players that just turning up is not good enough to hold down a first team place at Celtic.

This is not a criticism of our signing system which has been second to none over the past few years, but if we are going to sign a player at least give him a decent run of games to prove himself otherwise we are just throwing money down the drain.

      • Sweeney Hughes says:

        Any honest Celtic fan,lol.

        • Andybhoy says:

Sometimes we can be a bit reluctant to criticise and admit that some of our players didn’t exactly always give it their all in league games last season.

So what exactly is your point?

          • Sweeney Hughes says:

Your terminology seems to imply that ‘any honest Celtic supporter’ would be a Celtic supporter that agrees with you, what exactly would Celtic supporters who don’t agree with you be, dishonest Celtic supporters?

The fact is, if he was a better player, or fitted in better with the set-up at CP he would have got more game time, and therefor would not find himself being punted.
I’ve read this ‘he was never given a chence’ tripe time and time again, to suggest that we go to all the bother of scouting a player at considerable financial inconvenience then not ‘giving the player a proper chance’ is quite frankly bullsh1t.
Please explain to me what exactly would be the point of that.

            That’s my point.

See big rogne looks likely to be out the door. Hes never done anything to impress me always scared the bajasus outa me when he played too slow and clumsey. Im glad he knocked back the contract.

  • Thomas Haverstock says:

What is the point off having under 21 squad And singing player Who then don’t get a game If we bring player in. Make sure that they are need Hail Hail

  • Andybhoy says:

Well done you managed to dissect my ‘any honest Celtic fan’ comment with all the grace and eloquence of a Daily Record journo picking apart a Neil Lennon comment trying to create aggro.

I am in no way trying to say my fellow supporters are dishonest if they don’t agree with me, I am merely saying that sometimes we can be a little reluctant to criticise even when that criticism is valid, that is borne out of a fierce loyalty to our club and not dishonesty. Don’t put words in my mouth!

Can you honestly say without any shred of doubt that every player gave their everything in every single game last season, that none of them were a little complacent at times, that none of them allowed their form to dip because they thought their place in the team was a given. If you can your not just disagreeing with me your also disagreeing with our manager who said himself a few times last season that some players would need to up their game if they wanted to remain first picks and play in the European ties.

And as you say we spend a considerable amount of time and money scouting players, therefore why it totally out of the question to expect to see them given a decent amount of game time to show what they can do instead of one game in ten or a brief 15 minute showing at the end of a game. If their failure is down to a bad attitude then fair enough but if they are judged purely on what they do at training then that is unfair. Training matches can only tell you so much, competitive matches is where they should ultimately be judged. And I personally don’t think Lassad and Gershon got enough time on the pitch to prove their worth. you may disagree and that is your right.

I appreciate you are a die-hard Celtic fan, but I am too and I reserve the right to have a different opinion from you. That is allowed I’m sure you will agree. Show a bit more respect for your fellow supporters and don’t belittle their opinions as bullsh*t just because they don’t echo your own.

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

So me disagreeing with you is equivalent to the Daily Record misquoting Neil Lennon.
You’ve got a big tip foryourself and your opinions Andy. If we don’t agree with you we’re not ‘ honest Celtic supporters’ and if we voice our disagreement we’re no better than corrupt presstitutes.
    Great stuff.

I base my opinion on a trust and belief in our manager and his coaching staff, some of the best football minds in the game, otherwise they would not hold the positions they do, spending hundreds of thousands of pounds every season developing our set up, watching a player in training hour after hour, day after day, week in week out, coming to an educated valuation of the player and how he might or might not fit into the team.
They would be looking also, of course, at wages and transfer fees and if that money would, could or should be better spent elsewhere.

What exactly do you base your ‘ he wasn’t given a prope chance’ theory on?

I’m sure Lenny, his assistant coaching staff and the scouting team will be very interested in where it all went wrong…………only it didn’t, did it?

League and cup double, CL last 16 and the prospect of selling players for tens of millions of pounds that we bought for peanuts.

That will do for me. Outstanding!
But Iguess if you want to find something to complain about you will, believe me, it doesn’t make you sound enlightened or liberated in any way.

    HH

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

Enlighten me Andy, what precisely did Lenny ask the lad to do in the games he played in and what resulted in his performance?
Did he do the job asked?
    Did he follow instructions given?
How has he been in training?
    What are his fitness levels?
What is his attitude like in the dressing room?
Does he get on ith his team mates?
    How much is he earning?
What other player are available on that rate?

    Will I go on?

    HH

  • Andybhoy says:

Ah Sweeney your quite a quarrelsome chap aren’t you!

No I don’t have a big tip for myself, I was sharing an opinion with my fellow fans, that is the point of this site is it not? My opinion in no way supersedes anyone else’s and neither does yours for that matter, so you should try remembering that fact when you feel the need to make snide little comments to fellow supporters when their views don’t fall into line behind yours. Of course disagree and have a debate but there is no need to be a condescending smartarse when you do it.

And no your disagreeing with me is not the equivalent of a Daily Record hack misquoting Neil Lennon. But YOUR (no one else’s, so you can drop the collective WE) twisting of my ‘any honest Celtic fan’ comment and turning it into an insinuation that I am in some way accusing my fellow fans off being dishonest has all the hallmarks of a Daily Record journo picking apart a Neil Lennon comment and turning it into what he wants it to mean is. I have explained that comment to you but it doesn’t seem to be getting through the red mist that seems to have enveloped you so I’m not going to bother explaining it again.

You still haven’t answered my question. Did every player give his everything in every game last season? Lenny himself didn’t seem to think so, but don’t take my word for it go back and look at some of HIS comments following certain games last season.

Yes we did have an outstanding season which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I too trust Lenny and his staff’s judgement regarding who plays and who doesn’t, as you meticulously detailed these decisions are not made on a whim. I personally would have liked to have seen a bit more of Lassad and Gershon and yes I don’t think they got enough time on the pitch to prove themselves but that is only my opinion, feel free to agree or disagree with it as you like but as we don’t live in a fascist state I reserve my right to hold and air that opinion if that’s ok with you.

It is not a complaint to say that I don’t think these players got enough time on the pitch, merely a desire to have seen them pull on the hoops a little more often to see what they could have brought to the team that’s all. And even if it was a complaint so what? If certain people hadn’t stood up and complained in 1994 when the board of that time took us to the brink of extinction then neither of us would have a club to discuss would we.

Having a different view on something, or God forbid the audacity to commit the cardinal sin of being critical about something at our club doesn’t make me or any other supporter any less of a Celtic fan than you. Your opinions and support for Celtic are in no way superior to any other fan’s just because you choose not to be critical, so climb down from that towering pedestal you have placed yourself upon.

Just so it’s clear, I was in no way trying to sound enlightened or liberated, just passing an opinion on events at my club with my fellow fans. You on the other hand clearly need some enlightenment and liberation as that massive bruised ego of yours can’t handle the fact that people won’t always agree with you or your views. We (see I can use the collective WE too!) are entitled to have an opinion of our own no matter how much it sticks in your craw!

That massive ego is the same reason you will no doubt come back with some other snide smartarse remark aimed at your fellow fans in the future when their words don’t echo your own, but it doesn’t alter the fact, thank God, that all opinion doesn’t follow the gospel according to Sweeney Hughes!

  • Andybhoy says:

Oh and Sweeney for the love of God please don’t go on, I’m fed up listening to your pedantic little rants and also your use of the term ‘WE’ like some self-appointed spokesman for the entire Celtic support!

As fun as it has been rattling your cage and winding you up I’m getting bored now. And true to form your bruised ego won’t allow you to let my comments go unanswered so I will let you have the last word……..go on you know you wanna, you can’t resist it can you? Lol.

Sweeney my friend, it’s been emotional and quite good fun.

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

Just seen your rant Andy, sorry IT’S never realised I was the only Celtic supporter who’s ever disagreed wih you, fair dues to you Andy.
As for the rest, forgive me, I’ve, or rather,we’ve got more important things to do today.
Dugs don’t brush themselves you know?

Since you’ve not bothered answering a single point We’ve (lol) made, while you were getting low down and personal, maybe you could tell US just what this poor lad done at CP to deserve such treatment. Other than what you and your pals might imagine of course.
    And maybe more importantly, WHY?

    HH

PS. Please let me know when and where I can post, asap, thank you.

  • Sweeney Hughes says:

    ITS = I.

    Tabletitis

  • Andybhoy says:

You can post when and wherever you choose that’s the beauty of free speech.

You know how it is Sweeney, if somebody has a pop you gotta have a pop right back, not my style to back down. But to your immense credit you gave as good as you got so fair play.

    Hail Hail my quarrelsome friend.
