Celtic flag newsCeltic and Police Scotland are at odds with each other over the issue of flags and banners at Thursday’s match at St Johnstone.

Over the weekend it was claimed that discussions between the two clubs and with the police had resulted in a ban on flags and banners at the match.

That announcement was greeted by anger among the Celtic support with a number of fans contacting St Johnstone to get a refund on their ticket.

In mid-afternoon a statement from Celtic claimed that the decision had been overturned but there has been no word from either Police Scotland or St Johnstone on the issue.

Three hours after Celtic’s St Johnstone were unaware of the about turn according to a report on the BBC website.

Celtic’s statement said: “Following discussions today between Celtic, the local police and St Johnstone FC, it has been decided that flags and banners will now be permitted at the match on Boxing Day.

“We have an excellent relationship with everyone at St Johnstone FC and we thank them and the police for reviewing their initial decision.”

Twenty four hours earlier a statement on the St Johnstone website said: “St Johnstone FC and Celtic FC fully support Police Scotland in their attempts to eradicate this nuisance from our game and as part of the planning process for this match between the three parties and other agencies, and as there have been several instances of flags being used as cover for the igniting of these devices, a decision has been taken that for this specific fixture flags and banners will not be permitted inside McDiarmid Park.

“Fans are asked to be considerate of this requirement in the interest of their own safety and the safety of others.”

  • Monti says:

Is this what tax payers pay Police Scotland for? arguing about flags?
I would urge every single Celtic fan in attendance to take a flag!
    Wtf is going on????

  • peter says:

    Joe,

Seems to me, our club did not gauge how
strongly us the fans feel about this
    discriminatory decision.
They are now trying to backtrack, and St.
Johnstone will agree,as they will have been informed about a potential boycott.

But will Police Scotland back down ?

Is our club, finally sticking up for us ?
Or is fan power driving this, whereby the
club were forced to act on our behalf.

I hope it is the latter.Maybe, this is the
dawn of a new era, where the club listens
to the fans, and consults with us on fan
    issues.
At last they have grown BALLS to stick up
    for us. ?

  • Timtim67 says:

How is the linesman supposed to give throw ins and corners etc if he has no flag?
    HH

  • KevinBarry says:

I reckon in 10 years time no one will be going to the football as the authorities have sucked every bit of fun out of the game as it is. It’s becoming more hassle just to enjoy a day out at the football.

  • peter says:

Sorry.I thought our club had GROWN BALLS to stick up for us.
They didn’t,haven’t and are now trying to
    remedy situation.

They were part of a murky 3 -way- agreement.Just like Sevco’s murky 5-way
    agreement.
After our fans anger, they phoned CALEY
    security about SAINTS game.
R.HAWTHORN should resign or be SACKED.It ‘s his remit and has made the
club look foolish.Added to him being
    anonymous during Amsterdam fiasco, he
    should be shown the door.

Now SAINTS and POLICE SCOTLAND in
their ARROGANCE,say the ban still stands.

    ALL CELTIC FANS SHOULD SHOW
    SOLIDARITY AND BOYCOTT SAINTS !!

  • williebhoy says:

Every fan going should take a Union Jack and let the Police confiscate them all….would make good publicity for them NOT and show just how absurd this ridiculous idea really is.

For Celtic & St. Johnstone to agree to such utter nonsense says much about both clubs too. If the Police think there may be a problem with Pyro…then do your bloody job and immediately get into the crowd and arrest the idiots. How hard is it to spot a clown with a bright coloured flare with loads of smoke coming from it …not like the Police are watching the game surely !!!

  • Monti says:

Remember the days when everybody just talked about the players, the managers, great passes & great goals?
The great French midfield of the 1984 Euro championships, Tigana,Giresse, Fernandez & Platini, the strength of the German sides, Maradona, Zidane, Scifo, Hagi, Stoichkov, Van Basten?
Closer to home, the great Liverpool teams in the ’80s, Dalglish,Rush, Barnes, Beardsley, great managers like Brian Clough & Bobby Robson going about.
At Celtic we had some great moments & players through the ’80s, McClair, Nicholas, McAvennie, Paul Mcstay, John Collins, feed the bear, McGarvey, MacLeod, Tommy Burns, Provan, McCluskey!

    What is talked about now?
    Flares, flags, songs?
What a shambles the game has become!!!!

    Bah humbug!

    • paranoidandroid says:

Too right, Monti. The people that run (ruin) our game are doing a great job as usual. Incompetence and corruption since 1873.

  • lubo says:

I dont understand how not having flags would stop someone lighting a flare. Just more discrimination

  • peter says:

Another reason why Hawthorn must go,is
    over zealous stewarding at CP.
Heard an old bhoy on radio mental phone
    in last night.

He has been going to CP for over 50 years.
On Saturday, boys were trying to sing
Celtic songs.A bully boy steward came up
and told them to shut up.
Apparently it’s a crime to sing Celtic songs
    now.
The old bhoy was disgusted with this.He
also said one boy had a tri-colour (No not a God forbid flag) and the steward told
him to hide it,or he would take it off him.
    Eh ?
The Eire tri-colour flag is not to be shown
    by fans ?
Yet it flies proudly at C P to signify our
    valued heritage.
The old bhoy on the radio said, “he wonders what is becoming of his club.”

So do I. The Perth flag fiasco is sinister.
The reason given is just a smokescreen.

The invisible man Hawthorn has alot of
questions to answer.Better still, get rid of
him,and get somebody in who can do the
job, that best serves the INTERESTS of US,
    the Celtic support.

  • sligotim says:

Seems to me that since a certain club went bust we are now being targeted by all insundry, laws have been intruduced that attack our beliefs and traditions, am sick of this bigoted laws.

I was asked ‘a like ur shirt’ (it was Blue) I said nice its Our Lady’s colour his reply fenian barsteward, if you read comments they are telling us why don’t you go home. I wonder will greyscull have flags sorry flegs banned at their games?

Afraid its time we stand against them if our board don’t back us there in big shit,
    hail hail

  • sligotim says:

yes the wee neds have caused this, surely its time to shop them to authorities and name and shame them
drawkcab d;nt need ur cheeky remark

  • Monti says:

    drawkcab,
” this wouldn’t be can issue”?
    What language is this?

  • Monti says:

After Rangers death, Celtic fans & the club were always going to be in the sights of the brotherhood!
Songs banned, flags banned, Green brigade banned, it’s only a matter of time before they close a part of the stadium, tell us to take the tricolour down & Police Scotland will join in with the refs & have a strike because of big bad Celtic!
Celtic fans are being targeted big time & it’s totally out of order.
If Peter Lawwell won’t stand up for us, then he should resign & let someone who is up for a fight take over.
Celtic fans deserve better treatment than what we are receiving just now!

I’m not usually into the boycott thing but I think it would be the strongest example of the supports current mood……don’t go to the games, don’t buy from the club shops until the board publicly announce, enough of this criminalizing of the Celtic support!
It’s time to show our strength…..

  • peter says:

    Sky news,BAN now lifted.
Saints realise they would lose money.
    Celtic unable to handle flak.
A victory for Celtic fan power. Here’s to
    many more.

Next the BAN on the draconian Offensive
    Behaviour Act.

drawkcab,do you always laugh at your
    own non-funny jokes ?
Why should 98% be punished for the
    actions of 2% ?
People like you in our support, with this
    PC attitude,piss me off.
Why should we accept being made scape-
    goats ?
Do as your told,as you are plebs.Sorry,
when the system fails, you have to stand
    up for your rights.
Or,in your case just roll over and die.

  • peter says:

    drawkcab,
Now you are not making sense.
Have you been up all night ?
Go to bed,or go and chase a fare.

The bhoys don’t deserve to be called
smelly. You are a disgrace calling your own
    fans smelly.
They were out of order at Well. But were
you a saint in your youth.Probably an
    altar boy.
Smelly ? Maybe this is an issue with you ?
Many a taxi I have been in,the driver
    stinks of BO. It’s repulsive.
So drawk, time for YOUR bath !!

    haw haw haw

  • Joe McHugh says:

Anti-Zombie software update has rumbled drawcab.

    • peter says:

      Thanks,Joe.

I was just about to say, thanks for dracula’s
      removal,and your post appeared.

I had my suspicions about him.To call
your ‘ own ‘ fans smelly (not for the first
time ) is the lowest of the low.
