Tommy McIntyre Celtic newsCeltic have clinched the first ever SPFL u-19 title.

A 1-0 win over Queens Park at Toryglen today gave the young hoops the title ahead of Clyde and Stirling Albion.

Fiacre Kelleher scored the only goal of the game heading home a Steven Boyd free kick ten minutes into the second half.

It was certainly a competitive outing with the miserable weather and artificial surface allowing plenty of fierce challenges to be put in.

There was little scope for pleasing football with Celtic having to dig in to claim the points that took them to the title.

Joe Thomson captained the side and showed the benefits of his involvement in u-19 Champions League ties against sides like Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax.

Luke Donnelly played alongside Thomson in the centre of midfield and almost gave Celtic the lead in the 51st minute but his shot rebounded off the crossbar.

The competition is largely played for between clubs from the old Scottish Football League with Celtic joining in to help bridge the gap between the u-17 and u-20 leagues operated by the SPL and effectively playing an u-17 side every week.

Just 13 games were played in the ‘season’ with Celtic winning ten, drawing two and losing their only match at home to Clyde.

With 43 goals scored in 13 matches Tommy McIntyre’s side have been averaging over three per match with the highest win coming in a 10-1 thumping of East Fife in the opening fixture.

After a winter break the team will play in a League Cup competition with the aim being to develop players through to the u-20 side.

Assisting McIntyre with the coaching of the side is George McCluskey, Mio Krivokapic and goalkeeping coach Colin Meldrum.

TEAM: McCabe: Wardrop, Kelleher, McCart, Tierney: Nesbit, Breslin, Thomson, Donnelly, Miller: Boyd
