Sevco target Gavin Gunning has snubbed a move to Ibrox in favour of joining Birmingham City.

The defender was out of contract at Dundee United but rather than see his carear nose-dive like Jon Daly the Dubliner has decided to head for England.

Ally McCoist  made no secret of his wish to sign Gunning but the lure of playing alongside Lee McCulloch and Bilel Moshni proved easy to resist.

“I like Gunning as a player,” the Ibrox boss said shortly before a Scottish Cup semi-final against Dndee United. “Any footballer has to look after his family and, if there are question marks over finance, and let’s be honest there have been at our place, it does become an issue.

“I can honestly understand his concern because, as you know, we have been in administration, liquidation, bank loans… it’s only natural.

“Gavin is a good player that is out of  contract but, with the semi-final coming up, it would be totally wrong of me to start commenting on Dundee United players.”

Despite that obvious approach for the player  Gunning signed a three year deal for Birmingham yesterday after a move to Sheffield Wednesday fell through earlier in the week.

After being snubbed by Gunning Sevco signed Darren McGregor on a one year deal after the injury jinxed defender was freed by St Mirren at the end of last season.

Like Kenny Miller, McGregor’s one year deal suggests a measure of cost cutting is finally being applied at Ibrox although the lack of outbound movement is a sign that the current squad are unable to find similar terms elsewhere.
