Joey Barton (QPR)

Joey Barton’s 2-year-old son Cassius won’t have anything to complain about after his celebrity dad spent a night in Glasgow Airport.

As well as sounding off about the inefficiency of Easyjet, or Sleazyjet as Barton called them after being re-routed from Belfast to Glasgow, the QPR midfielder decided to pay a visit to the Celtic Shop at Glasgow Airport.

After a few rants to his 2.5m twitter followers he added: “Lets try this again. On the plus side the little man has a another kit to add to his growing collection #hailhail.” Alongside the tweet was a picture from the hoops shop at the airport.

While many around football complain about twitter and other social networks the example of Barton illustrates the power of social media to transform the perception of an individual.

On and off the park the midfielder has led a chequered life with sending’s off making the back pages and some other incidents making him a tabloid favourite.

Thanks to the direct communications of twitter, and indulging in more than his latest visit to Nando’s, Barton has cultivated the image of a footballer still in touch with the issues that effect and impact on his followers.

The scouser is a leading supporter of the Justice for the 96 campaign and helped take it to a whole new audience and recently appeared of the BBC’s Question Time.

Barton’s straight talking makes him a must follow twitter celebrity with comments like ‘I have never witnessed a bigger shambles in my life. Plane full of passengers diverted, young families with kids and one SleasyJet person!’ causing nightmares for the PR staff of Easyjet.
