Suarez BiteSix days after his infamous bite at the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini, Luis Suarez has finally admitted the offence and said sorry.

The striker has been the subject of worldwide attention since the Uruguay v Italy match last week that saw the South American’s reach the last 16 at the expense of the Italian’s.

By the time that Uruguay played Colombia on Saturday Suarez was back home in Montevideo and claiming that the damage done to Chiellini was the result of a slip.

Outside of Uruguay that story was given little sympathy with the cynical suspecting that tonight’s apology is nothing more than part of a PR exercise to help sooth the path of a transfer and an appeal to reduce a four month ban from football.

During the second half of today’s France v Nigeria match Suarez issued a statement on twitter saying: “After several days being home with my family. I have had the opportunity to regain my calm and reflect on the reality of what occurred on during the Italy-Uruguay match.

“Independent from the fallout and contradicting declarations that have surfaced during these past few days, all of which have been without the intention of interfering with the good performance of my national team, the truth is my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me.

“For this I deeply regret what occurred, apologise to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family and I vow to the public there will never be another incident like it.”

Chiellini responded to Suárez within minutes on Twitter, accepting the apology. “It’s all forgotten, I hope Fifa will reduce your suspension.”
