SFASteve Simonsen has been given a one match ban for betting on 55 football matches.

The Sevco keeper also has a one match ban suspended until the end of the season and can appeal against today’s SFA verdict.

Simonsen was found to have placed bets n 18 matches last season and 37 this term.

The softly softly approach follows on from last season when Ian Black was given a three match ban for betting on 160 matches with a further seven match suspended sentence.

The SFA have a zero tolerance attitude to betting on football matches but have lightweight punishments for players caught betting.

It is widely believed that betting among footballers is widespread with only betting against your own team regarded as a no-no.

Following Black’s suspension an emotional Ally McCoist branded sheets of paper at a media conference claiming: “This is a list of players and football officials in our country who quite enjoy putting a wee bet on, having a wee coupon and a couple of quid on their team.

“I would never disclose the names but it’s over 100 in 10 minutes that the boys have got me.

“It’s a wee bit of enjoyment to stick a wee coupon on for a fiver or a tenner or whatever they do.

“What I’m asking for is for everybody to get around a table, whether it’s the SFA, the players’ union, bookmakers, whoever.

“Let’s all sit around a table and find out what’s allowed, what’s not allowed and then we can start again.

“Nobody here, surely, is incredibly naive to think that this is anything like a one-off situation.”

No request was made by the SFA to McCoist to see the list.
