spflHibs are believed to be leading a bid to cut lower division clubs out of a play-off pay off.

When the Premiership play-off was introduced as part of the SPL/SFL merger it was backed on condition that all clubs in the then SFL benefited.

By handing over 50% of the gate money from the six extra matches the SFL agreed to the deal that gives the club finishing fourth top of the Championship the chance to play in the Premiership.

Prior to the play-off only the winners of the Championship would gain promotion with the new set up bringing extra meaning to the end of season fixtures.

Now, just days weeks away from the start of the play-off’s a meeting will be held by the SPFL to cut the pooled money from 50% to 25%.

Speaking to the Daily Mail an anonymous club source said: “The agreement two years ago was that the clubs from the bottom three divisions would get more of the money.

As part of that overall package we agreed a levy on the play-offs. No one at that time anticipated you might have a Rangers-Hibs play-off final.

Now there is a move by people with vested interests to say “we might be doing ourselves out of a bit of money!”. And they are attempting to revisit it.

That’s potentially outrageous because all clubs voted for the restructuring on the basis of the overall package and you can’t suddenly decide later that because you are in the play-offs you are not happy with it.”

As well as handing over 50% of the gate money clubs have to charge season ticket holders for the play-off matches.
