McGeadyEverton are believed to have put in a £10m plus bid for Inter Milan midfielder Xerdan Shaquiri putting the future of Aiden McGeady at risk.

After recovering from injury McGeady fell out of the picture last season at Goodison with rumours during the close season that his relationship with Roberto Martinez has broken down.

Inter Milan are happy to sell Shaqiri just six months after signing the Swiss internationalist from Bayern Munich with Stoke City and Schalke 04 ready to match their valuation.

That inevitably led to talk of a return to Celtic for the 29-year-old but with two years remaining on his contract at Premiership wages it would be unlikely that the hoops could match his terms and pay out a realistic transfer fee.

Sunderland are the Premiership side linked most strongly with McGeady but it’s unlikely that he would fancy a move to the north-east just 18 months after shifting to Merseyside.

A return to his footballing home in Glasgow’s east end has seemed likely since he headed to Moscow five years ago but it would take a strange chain of events for that move to happen during the current transfer window.

With four signings completed Ronny Deila’s has managed to bring in the type of players that he needs to fit into his 4-2-3-1 system with further moves likely to be very selective.

Negotiating his way through three rounds of qualifiers is the priority for the Norwegian with Nadir Ciftci and Dedryk Boyata settling into the side.

Saidy Janko and Logan Bailly will have a tough task working their way into Deila’s first XI but the Celtic boss is happy with the early signs from Ciftci and Boyata.

Within two minutes of coming on Ciftci created the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win over Real Sociedad on Friday night with Deila encouraged by those early signs.

Those little things can make a really big difference to a new player coming into a club,” he told the Evening Times. “Nadir is a confident lad anyway, but I think doing something like that means that your confidence is high from the very beginning.

That can be so important but we have been impressed with Dedryck Boyata, too, and the way he has come in and settled into defence.

This season there has not been huge changes to the team and things have been relatively settled. We will see what happens between now and the end of the transfer window.”
