Deila questions desire of the players

DeilaRonny Deila has questioned the desire of his players after the 2-1 Europa League defeat from Molde.

The Norwegian, like almost all Scandinavians, has a great command of English but at certain times the full meaning of what he is saying can become cloudy.

Straight after Celtic’s 2-0 Champions League defeat against Malmo Deila said that his players looked frightened and scared, comments he corrected two days later.

Last night’s defeat to Molde was every bit as devastating and raw with Deila again put under the spotlight after the match.

Asked if his players lacked character or confidence the Celtic manager told BT Sport: “I think, I want to see more desire, that people are giving more of themselves. There was not the pressure that we normally see from Celtic, that we are together but again this is my responsibility, this was disappointing.”

When mentioning pressure most supporters would think of the outside pressure that comes from playing for Celtic but in his interview Deila is referring to the pressure that he wants to see his side apply on the park.

If he is questioning the desire of the players it is largely the same group that he’ll be relying on against Ajax and Fenerbahce to restore credibility even if qualification looks unlikely.

Like it or not footballers are delicate creatures that don’t take kindly to criticism, when that criticism comes from within the club and is made public relations can become frayed.

On Sunday Celtic are likely to win at Ross County before the international break provides some respite. Before the next home match, at home to Kilmarnock on November 21 the club will host it’s AGM where every aspect of the club is likely to come under scrutiny and criticism.

Fed up with all the excuses from Ronnie, more desire? the team was rubbish again last night,
Petrov is correct….does the current Celtic team look fit? NO
Why is John Kennedy our defensive coach?. ..Ronnie and his assistants should go.
Molde thoroughly deserved to win and they looked fitter/ faster then any of our lot.
How many times has Ronnie said he will turn it around ? Did he show passion /desire standing on the touchline last night? Boyata and Blacket should never be in a Celtic jersey and I have to question Armstrong and Forrest….SPL players at best…(GMS ) as well, Rogic and Johansen
again league players at best, Bitton with his fancy dan turns and losing the ball most times ,
given a 5 year contract and someone to build a Celtic team around ? enough said.
One more bad defeat from ANYONE in Scotland or Europa and Ronnie will be gone, nice guy but not cut out for the job. Lambert awaiting a call?

Totally agree with you Swiss, I was close to sleeping during that second half.
Celtic sides of the past would have been embarrassed getting beaten at home in Europe by a club like Molde ( decent team tho), but this current Celtic side don’t have it in them to fight for the club!

I don’t give two fucks about trebles either, Europe must always be a gauge as to where Celtic are!

There needs to be change now!

Taxi for Deila, Collins and some of these players!

Monti..gave you a hard time a while back for not backing RD
Seems you were right all along, the guys oot his depth..team is clueless.defence a nightmare..what about the fast passing , and pressing game we were meant to play…RD,JC and JK time to go…

I’ve said it before and will repeat…we are not ALL singing from the same hymn sheet. Did Ronny appoint both Collins & Kennedy – clearly NOT. Both these guys, however good as players will have their own agenda’s – some hopes of managing the club. I’d ditch both of them, Kennedy to the development team to LEARN.

Meanwhile on the park we showed a complete lack of any system, ideas even basic teamwork.
These guys have let us down again & again…hiding behind excuses we failed to show up, unlucky etc. Young Tierney ran himself into the ground last night, others barely broke sweat.

We can maybe carry one of two domestically but asking a handful of players to carry 5 or 6 is too much. We need to get back to basics, get some genuine team spirit back into the side which was so badly lacking. For me we clearly have a split within the camp, Ronny needs to get those against him OUT even if it means relying on more young players who will truly give 100% for the jersey.

Molde were no more than a decent outfit, built on hard work and a specific shape / style. We were outworked / outfought which is simply a disgrace. If we match their work levels, our better skills would win us the game – it’s not rocket science. We failed to learn from previous mistakes trying to fit x & y players into the side while asking others to do more work.

Lustig had to cover the entire right flank, Tierney did the same on the left…leaving Boyata to defend with Blackett an imposter. Midfield again non existent, Griffiths marooned alone up front on less than scraps.

Make the BIG calls Ronny before they are made for you…fans aren’t stupid they know who is pulling their weight or not. Call it like it is…scared, didn’t turn up or just going through the motions – GET THEM OUT NOW.

I don’t mind losing, as long as we put in the effort…Under Strachan / O’Neill we were at least usually well organized, sometimes hard to watch but always difficult to beat. Now we are soft touches – gutless and too ready to throw in the towel.

Tempo HAS to be high, players should be working their socks off (Like Tierney/Lustig) if they don’t want to work show them the door.

  • Geordie says:

Is it my imagination that RD , his coaching staff and some of the players delusional ? I watched a team today which clearly showed they were out of their depth. Their play lacked skill, tempo and any resemblance of creativity. How are we as a club supposed to compete in the second teir of European football when we cannot open up defences never mind score goals.

The team selection, tactics and motivation rest firmly with RD and his staff. They are responsible for this and other insipid displays by a team I suspect are second rate !

There is no cohesion in their desire to win and I suspect that Ronny feels he will appease the Celtic support by beating many of the other teams in Scotland. If he does what does that say for the standard of Scottish football. People say we all miss the Rankers in the league I say it wouldn’t matter. Scottish football needs young players who have skill, confidence and feel comfortable on the ball particularly in tight spaces. We have the talent but I strongly suspect the coaching is poor at best! Many of our players seem unable to create opportunities to shoot and when they do it ends up in row Z in the stands!

The Celtic board need to enlarge the playing budget and spend wisely. By providing youngsters an opportunity to learn from quality players rather than these lacklustre opportunists.

In conclusion stop filling your pockets ( The Board) and provide the supporters with what they want ……isnt that good business practice after all ?

    Hail Hail

  • Kombuchis says:

    “Project Ronnie” isn’t working.
This season should have been one of progress, it’s not. The team is going backwards at an alarming rate. We are now a good SPL side, better than Aberdeen & Hearts.
In Europe, we’ve beaten KR Reykjaviik convincingly and squeezed past FK Astra, Dinamo Zagreb and Qarabag. Against better teams, Legia, Maribor, Salzburg, Malmo and Molde we are a distant second.
This is where we are, and clearly we don’t seem like improving any time soon.
People can talk about SPFL quality, or lack thereof, as a hindrance to our European “aspirations”, but the Slovenian, Swedish and Norwegian leagues aren’t eons ahead of us in truth, and yet we are convincingly beaten by teams from those leagues.
Aberdeen beat a decent Groningen side this season, then lost to Almaty, St Johnstone knocked out Rosenborg before falling to Minsk a couple of years ago. Teams ” on form” when they’re winning to teams from a “non competitive league” when they lose, apparently.
I happen to think your victories are achieved by having a clear tactical plan and the manager having knowledge that his team can follow it, unless the opposition are so far superior as to negate your tactics through sheer quality.
In Ronnie’s case, none of his conquerors in Europe have had to work so hard as to undo his tactics and beat his team, convincingly.
When you look at the quality of opposition, that is galling, to put it politely.

Still, we’ll beat Ross County at the weekend and the usual bluster will re-emerge, “back on track” etc, etc. That is, of course, unless Ross County have a midfielder of the calibre of 40 year old Daniel Hestad, journeyman, honest pro, unknown “lynchpin” of Molde midfield and a scorer last night.
When faced with quality like that we could, understandably, come a cropper ……………

  • Joe says:

Just as I expected. Ronny has found someone else to blame for his ongoing incompetences.
Buying cheap managers has cost us more than buying one good one!
He has literally cost our once great club upwards of 20 million quid, in less than two years!
As each day passes we continue to lose lose lose.
I read on here every day how much money Sevco are losing on a monthly basis. We are losing more than they are! Much more than they are, yet we all sit around sneering at their misfortune! Are we really so blind? This gamble has failed. As shareholders, we need it to be put right!

    • swiss says:

Spot on Joe……..it is us who are losing money!……watching inept players in a Celtic shirt.
Petrov again is correct in saying “A Celtic manager questioning the desire of his own players”
Very poor indeed Ronnie …yes they should have desire but that is your job to sort that out BEFORE they take to the pitch…
Unfortunately the board wont sack him just yet because if they brought in a new guy just now
he would have to manage the last 2 matches in the Europa and if they fail which looks likely then the new guy would also get slaughtered by the so called media.
Ronnie should go now and stop the nonsense that we/he is building for next years attempt on the Champions league group stages………and please give us Allen,Henderson, Christie and Cole in the team for starters and get rid of Armstrong, Forrest, Johansen……..Boyata and Blackett………..and GMS even though he didn’t play last night
      HH

  • Paul Mac says:

Ok its bad … I am on the Ronny side and ok I will tell you why … Its funny how when he says that the players lacked bottle or were scared (Malmo or Molde take your pick) everyone criticises BUT when Petrov or Sutton say the same everyone agrees. Lets go back to his appointment when he said that he was looking to bring in HIS team … and Pistol Pete said no … He SHOULD have been more forthright and DEMANDED HIS people .. like any manager would .. ok have one coach with ties to the club but the rest should be the managers choice. I don´t know if Collins or Kennedy are undermining him maybe with ideas of taking his job .. but (from afar as I am in Portugal and only see the tv shots) it doesn’t look a tight coaching unit. Kennedy may be a lovely fella but defensive coach for the first team he is not !

Secondly was Blackett forced on him because please don´t tell me that we scouted him ?? Please tell me the person who recommended him has picked up his P45 … The one criticism i would have is that he doesn´t yet know how to read his team .. which he should by now know how to do … However who would you choose to replace him ? And more importantly would they agree to work within our financial limits ? .. Here in Portugal Sporting lost in the Champs League like us and dropped into Europa league like us .. They have struggled like us and lost 3-0 last night to an Albanian team … Molde are undefeated in this league so far .. won in Fenerbahce drew v Ajax and beat us home and away .. They finished 6th in their league and know this is their ONLY chance for european football … They won´t win it but don´t forget who does win this trophy AUTOMATICALLY qualifies for the Champs League group stages ! Maybe our players need to remember this in the next 2 games … ALSO and as an Irishman I don´t mean disrespect BUT if you look at the Malmo or Molde teams there are a lot of natural players .. umm isn´t the quality of Swedish or Norwegian player BETTER than the Scottish ?? I know in the old days 80´s 90´s Scotland produced the Strachans Dalglishes Sounesses McClairs etc and now ? When was the last top quality player who played regularly for a top team ? .. Its hard for us to take but there is a big problem .. being in coaching or players … Why should Celtic have to be the ONLY team capable of progressing in Europe ? Where are the Aberdeens the Invernesses etc ? We now have a 100% must win game v Ajax with Bitton and Johansen out … hopefully Broony and big Jozo are 100% for that … in January Ronny has to go to the board and DEMAND another Centre half and try to get rid of the dead wood .. however that is obviously easier said than done .. I mean if we don´t want them who would ??
