Paul GascoignePaul Gascoigne’s agent has explained why the former England star was singing his hatred of Catholics. Tellingly Freda Baker refused to apologise over the performance at the Magnum Centre in Irvine.

News of the shameful scenes at a Q and A titled an Evening with Paul Gascoigne reached London today with the Daily Mail on line covering the story.

Fearful of the impact on Gascoigne’s future earnings agent Freda Baker explained his behaviour saying: “Unfortunately Paul tries to please his fans so gets himself in difficult situations and it’s something we have got to stop because he’s getting bad press.

He was singing but what he was singing I wouldn’t be able to tell you as I wasn’t in the room at the time.

We are got to be careful because Paul can get carried away. His fans put him in difficult situations. We have got to stop that happening.

It’s a shame because he’s getting bad press for doing it. They love to see him but they are not helping him. He loves to please his fans but he just gets swept along with it.”

The show was hosted by Tom Miller of Rangers TV who seemed to enjoy himself.

While his agent has gone on the defensive there has been no comment from Police Scotland or the Scottish Government on the matter.

Gascoigne spent three controversial seasons playing for Rangers (IL) after being signed by Walter Smith from Lazio.

After being sent off in a Champions League match away to Ajax his then wife Sheryl was pictured heavily bruised following a domestic incident.

In his home debut for Rangers (IL) in a friendly against Steau Bucharest he celebrated by pretending to play the flute.

Gascoigne repeated that gesture during his show at the Magnum as well as adding in ‘F*** the Pope and the IRA’ while singing ‘Simply the Best’ by Tina Turner.
