Massimo Donati is hoping to win a return to Scotland with Hamilton Accies.

The 35-year-old midfielder spent two memorable seasons at Celtic under Gordon Strachan and has joined up with Martin Canning’s side at their pre-season training camp in Spain according to The Scottish Sun.

Donati is best remembered for his last minute winner against Shakhtar Donetsk in November 2007 that paved the way for Celtic to reach the knock out phase of the Champions League.

The Ukranian side, who had beaten Celtic comfortably 2-0 in Matchday One, had taken an early lead at Celtic Park but were pegged back onto level terms thanks to a goal from Jiri Jarosik on the stroke of half time.

Celtic needed a win to edge in front of Shakhtar with Donati delivering the goods in the final minute to the delight of the capacity crowd.

Having edged ahead of Shakhtar Celtic lost their final match away to AC Milan while Benfica beat Shakhtar to allow Celtic into the last 16 where they lost out to Barcelona.

By the end of his second season Donati had fallen down the pecking order before enjoying a brief return under Tony Mowbray which included a scoring farewell at Arsenal before joining Bari the following day.

Last season Donati made 16 appearances last season for Bari 1909 who lost out in a play off for promotion to Serie A.

As well as their well established youth programme Hamilton haven’t been slow to cast their net far and wide for players with another former Celt, Anton Kurakins, first choice left-back last season.
