Celtic injury update

Stefan Johansen will miss both legs of Celtic’s Champions League qualifiers against Lincoln Red Imps after suffering an ankle injury in the 0-0 draw with Maribor on Saturday night.

A scan revealed no serious damage but the midfielder will be out of action for two weeks as negotiations continue over a transfer to Galatasaray.

Johansen started the match alongside Scott Brown and Nir Bitton in what looked like a dummy run for the team to face Lincoln Red Imps.

Callum McGregor was brought on to replace Johansen but Brendan Rodgers has no shortage of options in midfield with Ryan Christie, Scott Allan, Stuart Armstrong and Liam Henderson all looking to impress.

Another unexpected injury blow is a report in the Daily Mail of a suspected ankle fracture for second choice keeper Logan Bailly.

If the injury is confirmed Rodgers may have to move into the transfer market for a replacement with untried Leo Fasan the third choice keeper.

Over the weekend Celtic were linked with a £3m move for Danny Ward of Liverpool who spent part of last season on loan at Aberdeen.

That sort of fee would suggest that Ward isn’t coming in as a back-up to Craig Gordon who was the first choice keeper throughout Deila’s time at Celtic.

After spending 13 days with his squad in Slovenia Rodgers is happy with the way that they have applied themselves as he prepares for the serious action to get underway.

I have been really impressed by the quality of the team and if we can get some players in to help them and increase that quality,” the new boss said. “It should serve us well for the season.

There are one or two areas where the players need help with and that’s something the club and I are looking closely at to look and see if we can do anything on that front.”
