Jon Flanagan is determined to make up for lost time- at Liverpool.

The homegrown full-back is the subject of transfer speculation linking him with Celtic and Burnley but after two nightmare seasons ruined by injury he is determined to impress Jugen Klopp.

Earlier this month Flanagan told The Liverpool Echo: “I was in here over the summer either side of my holiday to do some sessions with the physios and the fitness coaches.

It was all about trying to get a bit of a head start really. It was Joe Gomez, Danny Ings and myself.

This is going to be a big season both for the club and for me personally. The extra sessions have got to benefit me. Hopefully I can get super fit and stay like that for the season.

I haven’t had a proper pre-season since 2013. I haven’t been able to do much on either of the last two tours. I want this pre-season to be different.”

Flanagan was in the Liverpool XI that won 2-0 at Wigan yesterday and seems likely to remain at Anfield hoping to impress Klopp.

Whether the German sees Flanagan as part of his plans remains to be seen but it looks unlikely that a move will be rushed through in time for Celtic’s Champions League qualifiers- assuming that the hoops see off Lincoln Red Imps on Wednesday.

Reaching the group phase of the Champions League is clearly the priority for Rodgers meaning that any Flanagan deal is likely to be pushed back towards the end of the transfer window.
