Liverpool have given Burnley permission to discuss a loan deal with Jon Flanagan.

The 23-year-old is expected to hold talks with Sean Dyche today with a view to signing up for a season long loan.

Flanagan made his breakthrough under Brendan Rodgers during the 2013/14 season and was linked with a loan move to be reunited with his old boss over the weekend.

Rodgers refused to comment on a possible move to Celtic but with a Champions League qualifier away to Astrana next week the hoops boss is looking for ready made first pick players.

Since joining England’s pre World Cup squad for Brazil in 2014 Flanagan’s career has been blighted by injury although he did return to action in the spring, doing enough to earn a new three year contract from Jurgen Klopp.

Despite that it seems certain that Flamagan will have to prove himself at Burnley if he is to have a future under the German at Anfield.

Speaking earlier this month about his hopes for the new season Flanagan told The Liverpool Echo: “I was in here over the summer either side of my holiday to do some sessions with the physios and the fitness coaches.

It was all about trying to get a bit of a head start really. It was Joe Gomez, Danny Ings and myself.

This is going to be a big season both for the club and for me personally. The extra sessions have got to benefit me. Hopefully I can get super fit and stay like that for the season.

I haven’t had a proper pre-season since 2013. I haven’t been able to do much on either of the last two tours. I want this pre-season to be different.

Brendan Rodgers has stated that he is hopeful of bringing in two players today. UEFA has an 11pm Celtic Park deadline for registering players with one more player allowed to register the day before the match, with the travel and visa issues involved in reaching Kazakhstan reducing the chances of a late signing to face Astrana.
