Chris Davies remains hopeful that Celtic will have at least one new signing in place for next week’s Champions League qualifier against Astrana.

It has been a quiet morning on the transfer front after Brendan Rodgers raised expectations of one or two signings being made today.

Celtic have until 11pm tonight to register players with the SFA and UEFA while a ‘wildcard’ signing can be added on Tuesday- 24 hours before the first leg.

Davies was hosting a media conference to preview Saturday’s match with Leicester but despite the Battle of Britain connotations the big issue is whether the squad will be bolstered for Wednesday’s match in Kazakhstan.

We’re working on those targets behind the scenes and hopefully we can get them done,” the Celtic assistant said.

We have our targets, have identified the areas that will improve the team. We know what we want, got to be the right person and the right deal. We’re hopeful of doing something, most importantly it has to be the right person.”

Since taking over from Ronny Deila, Rodgers has only spent £600,000 bringing in Moussa Dembele despite having to negotiate through three rounds to reach the group phase of the Champions League.

Astrana performed credibly in last season’s group stage with Rodgers anxious to boost his squad before the long flight to Kazakhstan.

After beating Lincoln Red Imps the Celtic boss said: “There is no doubt we need one or two more in that I want to bring into the team so let’s hope we can do something before that (window) closes tomorrow.

“That would be the plan, hopefully we could do that and that would be a great boost to the squad.”
