Kristoffer Ajer is happy to convert to a central defender.

The 6ft 5 teenager replaced Erik Sviachenko early in yesterday’s win over Wolfsborg and after a few early wobbles settled in to playing alongside Eoghan O’Connell.

With Rodgers almost having an entire team of midfielders to pick from it could be that taking a step back opens up more opportunities for Ajer.

It’s a big honour playing for Celtic and to get the man of the match is brilliant,” the former Start teenager told the Celtic website. “I came to Celtic to play and if he (the manager) gives me the opportunity, I’m ready.

He has a lot of midfielders so he knows I can play there but he also wants me to develop as a centre-half which I think is good to be able to play more positions.

The only thing I’m working on is to develop and to play games and if that means I need to play centre-half I will play there.”

Sviachenko should be available for the return match against Lincoln Red Imps on Wednesday night but with Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata out injured Rodgers has very limited options in defence.

Coming from the Norwegian League to Celtic is a massive change in culture but after his home debut Ajer is looking forward to more of the same.

It was my biggest experience ever,” he added. “Running out there without warming up and I did some mistakes in the beginning that I’m not proud of but after a while I performed well and it was a big experience hearing the fans shouting on me.

The biggest experience I’ve played in front of was 12,000 so playing in front of so many people was amazing.”
