In two weeks’ time Celtic will be back in action at the Nou Camp- their sixth visit this century to the Catalan cathedral.

Changes to the format of the competition are viewed suspiciously outside of the big leagues with many believing that it’s only a matter of time before the competition becomes a closed shop.

Barcelona are often viewed as a people’s club but with the need for commercialism they must compete with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich for every dollar.

Despite that background Barca director Jordi Mestre believes that sport should always prevail to ensure that his club never loses touch with the emotional and historical landmarks in the game.

Looking towards another trip to Glasgow after last week’s Group C draw he said: “It’s not only a football match. It’s an emotional match for Catalans and for the Scottish.

“It’s always a very special occasion. We must play and the best will win but we are happy to go there.”

He added: “Do Celtic belong in the Champions League? Of course. It’s a historical club, Celtic should always play in the Champions League.

“Time changes so football and sport must change too but Celtic Park has a special atmosphere and we are very happy to play against Celtic.”
