Patrick Roberts looks certain to miss both legs of Celtic’s Champions League play-off against Hapoel Beer Sheva.

The on-loan Manchester City winger felt a hamstring strain during the 2-1 victory over Astana on Wednesday night and was substituted by Stefan Johansen.

After the match Roberts posted an optimistic tweet about the extent of his injury but is now certain to miss the £30m play-off against the Israeli side.

Asked today if Roberts would miss out Brendan Rodgers admitted: “We will see but if you ask me now he would probably be a risk.

He could miss next two to three weeks. I’m disappointed for him as at really good level of fitness, operating at high level.”

The loss of Roberts will be a big blow for Celtic’s hopes of reaching the group stage of the Champions League.

In the first leg away to Astana he was outstanding, creating the vital away goal for Leigh Griffiths while showing great bravery against the robust treatment that was being dished out.

There was other better news for Celtic ahead of Sunday’s SPFL opener away to Hearts with Leigh Griffiths likely to be fit after taking a heavy ankle knock against Astana.

Nir Bitton and Erik Sviachenko will both miss the trip to Tynecastle but are recovering well from injury and should be available well before the first leg against Hapoel.

Dedryck Boyata remains on course to make his comeback next Saturday against Inter Milan in Limerick but no date can be put on a return to action for Jozo Simunovic.
