Willie Collum will referee Saturday’s match between Celtic and Sevco.

The Lanarkshire based whistler had a horrendous time last season after being appointed to officiate at Euro 2016 in France. Tradition normally gives the referee going to a major finals the Scottish Cup Final but that showpiece fixture was refereed by Steven McLean.

In back-to-back games in December he incorrectly awarded penalties to both teams in matches between Falkirk and Sevco followed by Aberdeen v Inverness Caley Thistle.

After the defeat at Falkirk Mark Warburton said: “I don’t want to come across as a sore loser but there are some shocking decisions there.

“The penalty changed the game, giving our opponent something to hang onto. The one question from me is, why isn’t Danny Wilson sent off? If it’s a penalty and a goal scoring opportunity then why wasn’t he sent off?

Everyone inside the stadium saw the incident happened two or three yards outside the box.

“If you are going to make that decision less than three minutes into a game of that importance then you must get it right, be absolutely positive about what you do.

“I don’t think, very politely, it was anywhere near a penalty. I haven’t had the luxury of seeing our penalty again but at the time I didn’t believe it was a penalty incident either.”

After that fixture Collum wasn’t given any further Sevco matches. Collum was sent home from Euro 2016 at the knock out stage with five other referees after taking charge of two group stage matches.

Frank Connor, who was the North Stand assistant referee for Steven McLean at the 2015 Celtic v Inverness Caley Thistle Scottish Cup semi-final will assist Collum on Saturday.
